Nah, I’m against splitting threads since this story is directly tied to the forum game. When we were attacked by Sola supporters for instance we reacted by writing the “Headquarters battle arc”, where heretics and Solans were our main antagonists. It’s not a random coincidence, it’s all tied to the game. We only have to agree to a few basic boundaries. So far nothing we wrote suggest space travel and I’d rather keep it this way. It just adds unnecessary complexity and confuses people. In my opinion: - Setting modern/futuristic a la deus ex. Most weapons/warfare are conventional, some futuristic tech. (Rellek’s cybernetic arm.) - All empires on the same planet. (An alternate earth.) Well, gentlemen, now that I see that you want to discuss the fact that confuses most of the people, we can do it. First of all, you have to notice the fact that it was I who started whole story bullshit and I fully intended to go the way you see now (well, besides Asagian stuff, that shit was quite random, but you have to admit it really pushed the storyline forward). Second of all, we're bit too far for me to suddenly change my style. And tertiary, I'm simply bad when it comes to writing about modern stories. The wars of the past were simplier. tl'dr NO. We can make some form of compromise, either by accepting some kind of retro-futurism or just everyone writing in their own way.

Vandergrift was helping Quartermaster by checking supplies they bought and how much Hahnreitern have now. In the same time, he was writing everything in a report. He was quite good at it - before he joined Hahnreitern, Godfried Vandergrift had been destinied to follow trace of his father as a merchant. His father hired tutors for him to teach young Vandergrift many useful things. As a result, Godfried Vandergift was bit bookish, but very smart boy, speaking fluently Claudin, Avanii and Chigarot. He could count and read, knew quite much of geography and knew basics of economy and trade. Unfortunately, Johann Vandergrift died from heart attack when Godfried was 15, leaving his family with unpaid debts, that happened due to very risky investition of Vandergrift senior in tulips, which backfired horribly. Soon, Vandergrifts of Oostereinde had to sell their house. Young Godfried with his mother decided to regain their lost glory. They started trading again. One day, Godfried was personally leading caravan when it was attacked by brigands. Guards were killed or ran away. When it seemed that Godfried would join his father, group of cavalrymen saved him. Those were Hahnreitern. Godfried then decided to regain the money in a diffrent way. He enlisted to the company. While clumsy at the beginning, he survived long enough to gain some skill and his knowledge made him useful. Finally they finished, Hahnreitern had food and water for some time and innkeeper got his money. Hahnreitern were preparing to leave, rolling up tents, extinguishing campfires and overall taking their things with them. Heidrun was talking with some sergeants. Joachim was sitting on some bench and looking at his men with slight grin, weirdly content with his life. - Good morning - Guessing from voice, it was Archibald - You're leaving now? - Yes. We are bit in hurry. Asagians won't be in Vospad forever. - Come on, you can wait few hours at least. After all, Icari doesn't want to hang around in her travels either. - Oh really? Usually royal processions take ages to reach their targets. - Well, not with our beloved ruler. Oh look, there she goes. Joachim looked behind. King Icari went outside looking for someone. Seems she looked for her Court Chamberlain, as when she saw him he immediatly led her steps in their direction. Then she noticed Joachim. She froze in place, her face pale as snow. Then it turned red. She instantly grabbed handle of her sabre. Icari looked around herself. There were people everywhere, and while most of them were taking care of their things, some actually looked at her doings and tried not to giggle. Icari released her sabre and straigthened up. With a gesture she ordered Archibald to come. - Well, seems i have to go. See you later on a road. Archibald left Joachim alone. Well, this will be an interesting journey Joachim thought. Finally, Hahnreitern took off, together with royal procession. There was a bit of quarrel when it came to decide who goes on front, but finally a compromise was made and both columns rode next to each other. As Archibald promised, they weren't travelling at snail's speed. At one moment Joachim had to go to bushes. He went to some groove and took a piss. When he was done, he turned around and saw Icari herself. This wasn't good. - Your Divine Maje- - Take your weapon out - she cut him midsentence, pointing her sabre in his direction. - Excuse me, what? - I want to duel again, hic et nunc! - And I do not. - Huh? - she raised her eyebrow and came closer, putting her sabre on his throat - Are you afraid of defeat? - Actually, yes. Icari's eyebrow went even higher. She put her sabre away. - Excuse me, what? - Oh, this is simple, you're just much better fencer than me. Even before, I had problems with defeating you, and I only managed that because, well... - Because I was in drunken rage? - Well, yes. She looked at him for few second with attention, as if to see any kind of lie in his face. Then she jiggled. The jiggle truned into laugh. - Hahaha! Nuda Veritas! - laughed king. - You are, sir, asinus asinorum! Joachim wasn't sure what that meant, but he was sure that it wasn't Icarian and that she was berating him now. Whatever. - Well, yes. Can we go back to the rest of people now? - Of course. - she gave him way with a smile - Ladies first.

Hahnreitern were sitting in their camp, centered on their commander. Closest to Rittmeister were his officers, most notably Lieutenant Heidrun Assendorp and Cornet Godfried Vandergrift. - So what happens next? - asked Godfried. - Well, it's obvious, I just comitted a capital offense by humiliating the ruling monarch, so I'm going on a scaffold tomorrow. I have to say that I really liked to travel with you together. You were a bunch of truly amazing people, and I hope we will meet once again in heavens, to travel together for eternity. Assendorp, when I will... go away, let's say, you will take command over our company. Please take care of the people and most importantly, take care of Godfried. - Everyone was looking at him in shock. Someone was sobbing in the back. Assendorp herself looked like she was about to cry. Joachim looked at them all and then laughed. - YOW! - he slapped his lap - YOU JUST GOT PRANKED! Reaction was priceless - YOU MOTHERFUCKER! - Why do I even care anymore? - I WILL KILL YOU I SWEAR! - shouted Heidrun in his face. Various death threats were flying in the air, but Joachim just greeted them all with small grin. Finally everyone calmed down. - I appreciate the silence, comrades - said von Volkenrose - But now I will be serious, even if this whole situation is not serious at all.
- Ludzie! Zaprowadźcie króla do jej pokoju! - Shouted Archibald and King (or rather Queen) was taken by rather large noble inside an inn. He looked after Icari and then turned to Joachim - Why don't we talk inside, with beer? Joachim just nodded and they both entred the inn and sit in front of each other. - Karczmarzu! Piwa! - shouted Archibald again. he turned to Joachim - Forgive my manners, I am Archibald Dobrzyński, Court Chamberlain of Her Royal Majesty. - Archibald moved his hand forward. - Joachim von Volkenrose, Rittmeister of Hahnreitern - Joachim took Archibald's hand and shaked it vigorously. Guessing from a grip, chamberlain was rather confident and practical person. Innkeeper came with beer. Archibald gave him 2 golden coins. Innkeeper's eyes went wide and it seemed he wanted to oppose, but Archibald closed innkeeper's hand. - Na koszt państwa. - he said. Innkeeper looked really happy and even bowed graciously before going away. - Well - Dobrzyński grabbed a mug of beer - for the health of the winner! - Archibald raised his mug. - For the face of dear Queen Icari, so it would heal very soon! - said Joachim, raising his mug. Chamberlain laughed, covering his mouth with hand. - I can't help but wonder how she'll react to it later. - Hm? - Well, you see, our King is quite unpredictable. She has two faces - one is unsufferable, always angry cunt, the other one is kind, generous lady. Usually she shows the latter to her friends and former to her enemies, but as I've said before, she's unpredictable. - Why do you call her King? After all, we can see she is a woman. Or are they? Archibald snorted with laughter. - Don't worry, she is a woman for sure. Well, Icari rules the country, and the country is called "Kingdom" and not "Queendom", so therefore she has a title of King. Joachim nodded, not quite exactly understanding it, but grasping the concept. - Where are you going currently? - asked Archibald. Joachim wondered if he should lie to him or be honest. He chose the latter. - To Vospad. - Oh? You know it's taken by Asagians under command of lord of Lennon, right? - I am perfectly aware of that. Actually, that's why I'm going there. I thought your Crown Marshall would use some help. - But what about the Claudists? - asked Archibald. Joachim gritted his teeth. Shit, let's not blow the cover now. - Claudists are losing the war. Sooner or later, we would find ourselves surrounded by Icarians, and we would be killed to the last men. It's better to fight on the winning side. - Ah, I see. - Archibald seemed to be content with this explanation. - And you? Why is the king so far away from the capital? - Ah, typical stuff, just one of the nobles organised a great hunting and his family are very influential people in the country, so it was better to show our faces there. Now after party we are heading to capital, so this means we'll have to travel together for some time.
- This means you'll be travelling with a person who holds a major grudge against you, is a ruler of an enemy nation and is known for her aggresive character? - asked Vandergrift. Joachim nodded to every statement. Cornet looked into night skies. Clouds were finally giving up and going faster and faster on the west, to Claudise. Some stars showed up and moonlight was piercing through a thin layer of clouds. Vandergrift realised he's been looking at the sky silently for 15 seconds - Well, who knows, maybe soon you'll wish that your prank was actually the truth.

It was dark when mercenaries arrived to inn. Even from outside, you could hear there was some kind of party over there. - Well fuck me if this isn't a perfect place to rest - said Lieutenant Assendorp. Joachim just smiled. - Comrades! We're setting a camp near this inn! - he shouted to a column behind him. A round of cheers answered him. People quickly dismounted, took their tents and placed them, then they took care of food, horses and water. In the meanwhile, Joachim entered the inn. In inside, there was a bunch of more or less drunken Icarian nobles and travelling merchants. Especially large group was concentrated around really drunk noblewoman in yellow coat. She took her attention to the fact that he entered the inn and seemed quite interested in him, but Rittmeister didn't see that. He walked up to the bar and sit on a stool. - What can I serve to you? - innkeeper asked in fluent Avanian. Guessing from an accent, he was a native Avanii. - One beer, please, and maybe some supplies for my men. But let's take care of the latter later. - Joachim put few coins on desk. Innkepeer just nodded and few seconds later he handed him a mug of beer. - By the way, can I know where we are and how are we supposed to travel to get to Vospad? Innkeeper mumbled something and exited main hall. Few moments later he was back with a map of Icarin. - Vospad is right there, on the north by the sea. - Avanii pointed to said location. - We are here, not so far from Tarchogorod - he pointed first to mentioned city, and then to their current location. - You will get there easily, just follow the main road and look at signs on crossroads. Innkeeper went back to serving the other clients, leaving Joachim alone with the map. Von Volkenrose looked at it, planning the most efficient way to Vospad, so that they arrive there before the war ends, but also that they don't starve in the midst of their journey. Suddenly, the woman in yellow coat sat next to him. - Heyyyyyy there Joachim felt that nothing good will come out of this talk. Drunkards were quite annoying and pathetic, but just try to show them what you think of them and you'll have a fight. - Hi. - Can I know your name? - Isaac Eckstein - Joachim bursted out without thinking. The woman looked confused. - Whaaaaaat? You are Catian? But you don't have cat ears. Or do you hide them under your hat? - She tried to get his hat off, but Joachim just stopped her by grabbing her hand and taking his hat off himself. - Well, you see, we, Catians, inherit cat ears after mother, while my mother was "normal", as you'd call it, with my father being Catian, hence my name. - The bit about ears was actually true. Joachim learnt that from one Catian who had similiar case. Or maybe he lied to him? Whatever. It seemed to work fine for Icarian woman. - Ah, I see. Can I know where you are going? Joachim looked at the map and just took first random city he saw. - Icarogorod. - Captial? Haha! What a coincidence! Actually, I'm travelling there too! Then she leaned on him. He pushed her back, but she leaned in him again, this time even hugging him firmly. He tried to gently push her, but seeing that this isn't working, he just pushed her so hard that she landed on a floor - Get the fuck off me you stupid drunken piece of shit wench for fuck sake - Mercenary life teaches many skills, amogn them was ability to throw such clusters without any thought in 1 second. Woman's face was getting redder with every word, changing into purple. The whole hall went silent. Innkeeper just snatched the map back and ran to his room. Joachim noticed that Heidrun was watching whole scene through inn's window, sending signals for her men to get ready to intervene, but also giggling slightly. - YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS! - Suddenly, she roared and everyone in the bar cowered. - ARCHIBAAALD! - W czym mogę służyć? - A richly dressed man walked to her, and they started speaking Icarian. - CHCĘ SIĘ BIĆ! - Wasza Królewska Mość, ale... - ZAMKNIJ MORDĘ I PRZEKAŻ TEMU PLUDRAKOWI ŻE GO WYZYWAM NA POJEDYNEK The man just gulped and turned to Joachim. - She wants to duel. - Fine for me. - CO POWIEDZIAŁ? - Zgadza się. They went outside. Hahnreiters were already waiting there, with hands on their weapons. - Make some place, I'm having a duel here. - He looked Heidrun into eyes - Just try to intervene if she will be close to kill me. They stood against each other. - Any rules, Archie? - Rittmeister asked - Yuo fight until one surrenders or loses conciousness or life. Joachim was composed and attentive, while his opponent was snorting air and furious. They took their weapons. Von Volkenrose took his rapier out and stood in stance graciously, while Icarian just pulled her sabre out of sheath and throw the sheath away, standing like a murderer. Archibald looked at both of them and then he said: - Ales! Icarian charged with a roar, on which Joachim just reacted with simple old trick, which was just pointing his sword in front of him. However, Icarian was having none of that, she just moved the balde out of her way with sabre and started attacking Volkenrose directly. He doged the first strike and blocked the other ones, but hardly. She was damn fast! She was probably an exellent fighter and would kill him easily, if she was nto that drunk. Well, time to use it against her. Joachim started manouvering around her, but she was still keeping up with him, although hardly. He moved some distance from her. She charged again, but this time Joachim just slipped through next to her and rammed his elbow in her back. She flew forward, almost falling on ground, but she leaned on her sabre. Joachim went to offensive. He thrusted and slashed, but every his attack was blocked or parried. uddenly, she managed to disarm him. A triumphant spark shined in her eyes. Joachim however, instead of running for his weapon, just leaped on her. He grabbed her hand with sabre by the wrist and with the other hand he landed a fist on her face. She fell on the mud and shit, with Joachim on her, who landed few more hits just to be sure she is unconcious. Everyone went silent. - Well, that was quite unorthodox - commented Archibald, breaking the silence. Joachim started to immediatly take care of Icarian moneybag. - it is not everytime I see a random cavalrist defeat a king in a duel. Joachim freezed with moneybag in his hand. - You mean... Archibald just nodded. - Yes. Congratulations, you just won with King Icari VII of Isidolde bloodline. Joachim looked on Queen... or King... or whatever. He decided that it would be better to leave this particular moneybag with its' owner.

Adelardo Bagnoli had watch tonight. He was looking with sleepy eyes into the darkness of the night, trying to spot anything. Homestly, he hated this job. His company has been garrisoning a town for five months already. In the meanwhile, there was nothing to do, no one attacked them and the only company were travelling from time to time Icarian forces, but they consisted mostly from stuck up noble twits, who despised commoners like him and outside world overall. Icarians always thought they were the most perfect people, and everyone who is diffrent from them is wrong. Adelardo was standing under the awning of the outpost, but after days of endless rains it leaked. Suddenly, the rain stopped. Adelardo greeted the silence with relief. Suddenly, the silence was interrupted with two gunshots.
Vandergirft and a few of his selected Hahnreitern were crawling through mud and grass. Rain and night were their assets - former jammed their noises and both of them reduced vision of their enemies. They finally reached the building on the right side. Vandergrift looked through the window and saw that no one was watching. He climbed the window and got inside the building. It was full of weapons and barrels. "Weapon stash" he thought. Perfect. He remembered this place and waited for the others to join him. He opened the door on outside and checked if there is someone. There were two guards, chatting with each other, walking dwon the road. Godfried waited until they passed the stash and his squad sneaked behind guards' backs. They entered another house, which served role of soldiers' barracks. All were sleeping soundly. hahnreitern took their knives and cut Solarians' throats. They repeated it with several more houses. Until everything fucked up. One of the soldiers wasn't such heavy sleeper as his comrades were. When one of reiters was about to pierce his throat, he stopped hand with knife and started struggling. It woke up several others and one of them started shouting. They were quite quickly dealt with though. Doors opened suddenly and two soldiers entered the house. Vandergrift didn't think much - he just grabbed his pistols and shot both of them. Even if that little struggle in the barracks didn't wake up everyone, then loud shots have surely done that. Cavalrymen started to run. From further houses, soldiers started to go outside, often naked or wearing some underwear, holding weapons. Bullets started flying around them. Cornet reminded himself of weapon stash. - Run! I'll join you in few moments! - he ordered his men. They split up - Vandergrift ran to cache, while his men took a shorter route out of the camp. With corner of the eye, Godfried saw as one of the soldiers drops dead, hit by a stray bullet in head. Vandergrift busted inside of magazine. He took his sword and used it to block the door, which would give him few second. He took some small barrel with powder and poured out its' content on the floor. Godfried jumped through the window and took out flint with a tinder - he always kept it hidden for special cases. Cornet placed tinder on his knee and lit it up. Wood soon started to burn. He took it in his hand and then he heard a loud noise - Solarians finally broke into the house. Vandergrift started to run in direction of open field and threw piece of wood into the house. Blast of explosion threw him a good few meters forward. Vandergirft hit the ground with his face. Debris landed all around him. He laid there for some time. Then he got up and started to walk slowly to the place where he left his horse.
Joachim's eyes opened up when he saw sudden explosion. You'll know the signal when the time comes, commander, said Vandergrift back then. If that wasn't a signal, what was? - Hahnreitern! This is our moment! We have to strike quickly, before they manage to control the chaos! Charge! Reiters galloped to the Coeuvres, followed by carts led by larger amount of horses than usual - this was done to give them more mobility, which would really be needed. Cavalry was greeted by Solarian muskets - while they were mostly in chaos and disarray, some squads garrisoned the earthworks. Few horsemen dropped from their saddles. However, rest of them didn't care about it. They rushed into the town with full speed, not stopping to fight. Soon, Godfried's squad rejoined them, with Godfried barely keeping himself on a horse. Finally, they galloped through the bridge, not stopped by anything. This was it. Finally, they got to Icarin.

Rain was losing its intensity. Thankfully, main roads such as this one were paved, so Hahnreitern didn't have to go through muddy hell. Some time after escaping the battlefield, Joachim relised that he forgot about most important thing - approvisation. Luckly, Assendorp proved her competency by snatching few carts with food, ammunition and water. They were secured for next week. Rittmeister looked at the area nearby. In the very first days of war, those lands suffered the worst, being an object of Icarian push in initial phase. Whole villages were burnt in raids, hundreds were dying every day. Even now trees along the road were full of hanged corpses. There was no point in checking the ruins - Icarians have done that hundreds of times. Joachim checked the map of local area to see what was ahead of them. It was a small town of Coeuvres with a bridge on former Icarian-Claudist border. Perfect site for outpost. - Ugh. Heidrun, can you come here for a second? - Hm? He showed her map and pointed to Coeuvres. - What are we going to do about it? Heidrun started to think intensively. - I have no idea, honestly. We just have to hope that they were feeling too confident and there is no outpost, or it is very small. They arrived next day. Coeuvres was surrounded with field defenses, and garrisoned by mercenary company. - So much of our hopes - concluded Assendorp. Joachim looked at the town via spyglass. Solarist mercenaries, no doubt. Their armoured musketeers would create some problems, and if they form pike wall in front of the bridge... - Vandergrift! Get two people, we have to go on reconaissance! Soon, they separated from main group. They approached the town from left side, to no avail - it was fortified just like front. They made a large arch and saw the town from right side. That one wasn't fortified, but it wasn't necessary - building already provided enough cover and also blocked way to rest of the town. Joachim sighed. - Well, looks like we have to find another passage, of course if you don't have any plan, Godfried. - Well, to be perfectly honest, I have one, but I don't know if this works. - I'm all ears now. - said curious Rittmeister

Rain was pouring from clouds mercilessly in city of Angery. Marshal Léon Rémi de Dressau was lying in poodle of blood without life. His guard was lying not far away on cobblestones, while the other one died resting on wall of brothel. At his legs was lying a female corpse, all clad in black and wearing a Chigarit mask. City guards and Prophet Guard were investigating the crime scene looking for something more. Archprophetess Claude Trilelo, accompanied by Cardinal de Obrein and Spymaster Gérald Florentin Géroux, were looking at the whole scene. - In the name of Kayto - Claude whispered in shock, seeing this bloodbath. She turned to Gerald - Can you tell us what happened? - Well, situation is quite simple. From what witnesses say and what we see, our dear friend went to brothel like every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When he decided to go home, a group of people in masks attacked him with various melee weapons, killing him and his two companions, suffering loss of one woman, who was shot from a pistol. What is not simple, is the fact of where they currently are, and what are their next plans. Archprophetess nodded. - And do we know who they were? - Not exactly, but I have some suspicions - he said, handing Claude Icarian sabre. - Well, this would explain much, but how do we know it wasn't just a weapon of choice or simple false flag? - Asked de Obrein unconvinced. - I also thought about that, but look at this - Spymaster pointed to a small golden emblem on the blade, near handle - Would a simple mercenary or other nation spy use a sabre from Icarian Royal Armoury? I may be going bit too far, but the people we may be standing against king's own selected assassins, if they use weapons from king's personal armoury. Cardinal looked into the sky. The clouds themselves seemed to cry over their fate. Suddenly, he saw something in the window of one of abandoned houses (the district was full of them). Something... something like... Musket barrel. - Watch out! - He cried and leaped on Claude, throwing her on ground. Firearm cracked. - Oof! - She groaned, hitting the cobblestones - in the name of Kayto, you really love me that much? - she asked, but then she noticed a painful look on his face - What happened? - she asked, but deep down she realised what it was. A quick look on his side confirmed her fears - a growing dark stain on his red uniform. Another firearm cracked, this time bullet hit cardinal in his back. Prophetess' Musketeers fired their guns on the buildings from which shots were taken. Guards rammed into the houses nearby, looking for other shooters. In the meanwhile, de Obrein moved from Claude, slumping on the ground next to her. She quickly got up and leaned over cardinal. - I won't let you die - she said with determination and placed her hands on his chest. She concentrated and started healing him with magic. Lead in his body evaporated, wounds got healed and blood was refilled. - Your Everknowing Majesty - Léopold Clément Pierre, commander of Propher Guard, saluted - we need to get you back to the palace, as soon as possible. Claude just nodded, and handed the unconcious de Obrein to one of the musketeers. Guards came back with empty hands, the assassins simply ran away via the rooftops. - Soldiers! - Shouted Leopold - form protective formation around Archprophetess! - soldiers formed a circle around Claude - March to Her Majesty Palace!

Rain. - Are you being fucking serious now? - Heidrun asked the world. The world only answered with raindrops. Joachim looked at the bishop, trying to see what he thinks about it, but veil on his hat made it impossible to read his emotions. - Soldiers! - he shouted - Advance! Claudist infantry started marching, sounds of pipes, drums and boots on muddy land filled the air. - Time to earn some gold, comrades - Said Joachim to his men. Hahnreitern started to slowly ride on flank. - Argh, this weather will be disasterous! - Assendorp was still in bad mood. - I'd say quite diffrent - replied Joachim - It's actually beneficial for us, as we won't be getting shot in the field during charge. Guns wouldn't help us much against entrenched enemy. - Still - Heidrun was not giving up - We outgun the Icarians, who are more concentrated on melee. - Only cavalry, and we have enough pikemen to solve it out. Icarian infantry... - Lieutenant chuckled - you know well, it seems. Sounds of gunfire roared ahead. While it wasn't a storm of lead and powder as usually, it still was. Some cannons actualy done breaches in Claudian colums, but it was nothing scary. Claudian cannons responded, bit better, but still not much. Rain seemed to intensify. Most of the land has become mud. Icarian cavalry rode out of the camp, thousands of horses galloped on Claudist ranks. Pikemen and musketeers formed square on slope of a hill. The cavalry still charged. On the lead moved the worst nightmare of any commander - Icarian Winged Hussars, armored from toes to head in plate, holding 6-meter long lances, armed with estocks, sabres and pistols. In the meanwhile, light cavalry moved on flanks, trying to encircle Claudists. - We have to interrupt them! - shouted Joachim to his people. His lieutenant just nodded. - Take your firearms! Advance! Hahnreitern galloped on Icarians, holding pistols or bandolets. The famous banner, rooster on a turquoise background, was waving on the wind, heavy from rain. - Aim! - shouted Lieutenant Assendorp - Fire! 283 reiters pulled triggers of their weapons. Some fired. Some didn't. One actually exploded in hands of shooter. Some bullets hit their targets, which caused Icarians to react. Now they were concentrated on the mercenaries. - Prepare second volley! - shouted Assendorp and reiters took their pistols. Icarians started to shoot from their firearms and bows. When they got really close, Heidrun shouted - Fire! Another round of misfires and shots. This one was more devastating. - Charge! - shouted Joachim and everyone took their rapiers. Icarians and Hahnreitern clashed. The latter did more damage with their charge downhill rather than uphill, and while Icarians were better fighters, they soon got outnumbered and started to retreat. Right flank was secured. Joachim looked around and realised that it was their chance. On left flank Icarians fought with de Wotrein's cuirassers, while the center... Hussar charge wasn't that good, but it was still enough to entirely devastate two first ranks, especially with their lances being longer than pikes. After their lances got broken, hussars charged with estocks and sabres and were now closed in combat with halberdiers, musketeers and pikemen. Hussars were being pushed back, but slowly and painfully bloody. In the meanwhile, the camp was bit damaged with artillery fire, but most importantly, empty besides some guards and camp followers. - This is it, comrades! Time to start working for those 10000 Clauds! - Shouted von Volkenrose to his men, who replied with cheer. Mercenary company galloped on the camp. - We have tail - Said Heidrun to Joachim. Indeed, some cavalrymen decided to chase them. - Whatever, we just have to break through! Suddenly, one cannonball actually hit the rotte. - And I think we should do it fast. Rain changed into a storm. They rushed into the camp, shooting, slashing and trampling anything in their way - people, carts, tents, whatever. From time to time somebody died, shot or impaled on a polearm. Then they saw the gate, being the only thing between them and the other side. - Destroy it! - Ordered Joachim, shouting over the thunders. Some reiters dismounted, took axes, swords or berdiches lying around and started chopping. In the meanwhile, rest of their comrades stood face to face with chasing them Icarians. They fired twice, but most of the shots were misfires. Two groups of cavalrymen clashed. Joachim parried a hit of a sabre and thrusted forward, only to be parried. He blocked a hit from overhead, but when he reflexively let his guard down, his opponent did it again. He dogded and thrusted forward, this time hitting his enemy in his armpit and foward, to the chest. Icarian slumped in saddle and dropped dead on ground. The gate finally gave up. Cavalrists mounted themselves again and rushed outside. They did it. In front of them was Icarin. And somewhere, on the north-east, was Vospad.

- The plan is simple - said Joachim to his men - The entire army will charge the Icarians. We go with them, acting like normal battle unit. - That's quite unambitious plan - Snarked Lieutenant Heidrun Assendorp. Men at the campfires chuckled. - Please don't interrupt me, darling - Joachim said heartily, which annoyed Heidrun. Being one of few woman in the regiment, she was an object of either admiration or scorn. Quite early in her career, both happened quite often, so now it was a bit triggering for her. Rothmagister frowned seeing that she took a deep breath and was preparing for a long stream of swearwords - That was an order, Lieutenant Assendorp. - Yes, sir. - So, you are right, Assendorp. The plan is quite simple, we go into battle, part of our artillery starts hammering their field defences, we ride right through their camp and we go out on the other side. - And after that? - Asked Godfried - Well, Cornet Vandergrift, after that we go into Icarin, try not to get stopped and finally arrive in Vospad. Hahnreitern started to whisper between each other. "Madness! We'll be going right through enemy lands! How are we gonna do it?" and other things in such mood. Von Volkenrose just waited patiently for them to finish talks, smiling and looking meaningly. Cavalrymen went quiet again. - I know it sounds like madness, but trust me, it is not that hard. Cornet Vandergirft, you are very good at this, can you describe Icaria, from economical-societal view? - Icaria is quite large country, but it doesn't really matter, as most of its lands are wastelands or just simply uninhabited. It is also the country with largest amount of nobles, which is about 10%. Nobles are divided on four classes: Magnates, Middle Nobility, Farm Nobility and Bare Nobility. The division comes only from wealth and prestige of the nobles, as they are equal in laws: Bare Nobility has no lands at all, just their sabre, horse, clothes and noble title. Farm Nobility usually owns a small village, or even tend their lands personally. Middle Nobility owns usually few villages. Magnates are the major players - they have often large families, own a large part of a country, sometimes even a city, and they usually have or had someone in the government. They also often candidate for a king. Reiters murmured, but Joachim just raised his hand. Godfried continued. - Political system of Icarin can be compared to Asagian one. You have king who rules the country, but his power is limited by a palriament, which consists of higher and lower house. However, the diffrence between Icarin and Asagia is the fact that throne is not inherited. Every time a king dies, whole nobility goes on some field and choose some noble to be their king. Of course, there are various promises, pacts, shady deals and all sorts of political game. Foreign nobles can also take part in the elections. - I should apply one day - Joked Rothmagister to brighten the mood. Camp laughed - Anyway, continue. - There is nothing to say more, maybe beisdes the fact that nobles often oppose each other in politics, and the fatc that there are few major cities, but all of them are small and generally unimportant, besides Vospad. - Where we are going - Added Joachim - As you heard, gentlemen, due to the fact that even pettiest of the nobles are allowed in a political game, Icarians often fight with each other for power. And I guess that someone as powerful as Field Marshal Tsch-Cza-Tzarno-fuck it - another round of laugh - has also quite many and powerful enemies. Who said that they won't help us? We aren't Claudists. We are mercenaries. We are Hahnreitern! Who we are? - We are proud bastards! - Roared soldiers - We are honourable scoundrels! We are Hahnreitern!

Janvier, von Volkenrose and few other people were sitting by the table, on which map was laid. Said map showed political map of the world, before the war had started. Now it was full of figures, lines and scribbles. Horrifyingly large part of said map was marked yellow. - Gentlemen - began Janvier - up until now, our situation seemed to have only one solution. - There was another solution, but your fervor blew it up with fire of cannons - Growled Duke Diederik Ambroise de Cheuland. - Ah, so you preferred shameful armstice and letting those brawlers take another prey, so you could live few more days? - Jabbed Joachim - Shut up, sellsword! You're in no position to judge me! You don't have army that doubts in point of this war! You don't have lands that are ruined by taxes, pillages and drafts! - Diederik, calm down - Landgraaf of Ocrines, Jurgen Cornelis van Rompuy said - You are not the only one whose lands suffered. - Unfortunately - Added Godefroy Traver, comte of Bucrein - And I fully agree with duke de Cheuland. We're running out of lands, men, supplies and worst, money. - Silence! - Roared bishop, hitting the ground with end of his cane, which resulted in loud bell-like sound. Seeing that quarrel was prevented, he continued - Yes, our situation was really bad. But, with Asagians coming to war on our side - he moved figure representing Asagian ships near Icarian shores - and landing in Vospad - Jeremie placed figure of infatryman near mentioned city - Icarian armies will have to divide - This time Janvier moved one of three Icarian figures, cavalryman representing Field Marshal Łucjan Czarnogłów, near city of Vospad - which will in turn weaken their forces in our area - Bishop pointed to their camp near river of Elst - and maybe allow us to push them back - Battlepriest gently moved figures towards the original Icarian Commonwealth borders. Everyone went silent for the moment, thinking about the idea. While the situation was far from being perfect, they finally had some chances of actually striking back. - Icarians still outnumber us. We can do it, but not without large casualties, which can in fact be our doom - Noticed Diederik. - We were doomed since the beginning of this war, de Cheuland - Said Godefroy - Let us have this one final charge. - I agree - said Marquis Émilien Barthélémy de Wotrein, who was silent until now. - So do I - said van Rompuy - Semms like I have to yield - noticed Duke Diederik - So, we came to an agreement - said Jeremie - Sir von Volkenrose, I have mission for you. - Huh? I mean, what do you desire, Your Excellence? - Can you deliver this message to Duke of Lennon? - Jeremie handed Joachim a scroll with bishopric sign. - Sir, I mean, Your Exellence, Duke of Lennon is- - In Vospad, yes. However, you and your people are known for doing things that are thought to be impossible. Can I count on you? Joachim von Volkenrose started to think. This was, actually, doable. A small cavalry regiment, mercenaries in addition, going through such rowdy land as Icarian Commonwealth, where nobles ar more busy fighting each other in parliament than battling their actual enemy... The trickiest part was near the end, in Vospad, where they had to break through Icarian siege and not get shot by Asagians. Actually, it's a good opportunity... - Of course, you will get paid extra for this task, about 10000 Clauds - Said Janvier, guessing Rothmagister's thoughts. - I shall see it done - Said Joachim taking the letter and saluted.

Godfried walked away, leaving Joachim alone. The latter watched the field for some time and decided to go as well. Then he heard a horn. Shortly after that, cracking of firearms and shouts. "Sounds like trouble" he thought and took his pistol in hand. Experience taught him that he should always have his sword and two pistols with him. Rothmagister ran to the source of chaos. Midway there, he saw glow of fire. Around him, soldiers were getting up and taking their weapons with them. Suddenly, against them charged group of horsemen. Their fur caps and long coats shouted one thing. Icarians. Joachim aimed his pistol and shot. Cavalrist on the lead recoiled in his saddle and fell on the ground, never to get up again. Arrow whistled near Joachim's ear - seems like they wanted to avenge their companion's death. Reiter's commander laid on the ground and shot from second pistol. This one misfired. Icarian horseman was charging on him with spear, but he was stopped by halberdier, who pierced his chest with end of his weapon. He didn't have much luck though - not long later, noose of lasso tightened on his neck, and he was pulled away and strangled by one of Icarians. Claudist musketeers fired, devastating most of the charge. Rest of the cavalry retreated. Joachim reloaded his pistols and moved forward. The further he went, the bigger was amount of dead bodies and burned or trampled tents. He heard hoofbeats and turned around, to see another Icarian, charging head on with raised sabre. Before any of them could do anything, Icarian's chest was pierced by a golden-glowing ethereal spear. When he slumped from his saddle, the spear dematerialized. Joachim turned to direction where the spear came from and saw bishop Janvier himself, who was as always wearing his characteristical red hat with large rondo and armor on his religious attire. Jeremie tipped slightly his hat to Joachim. Horns sounded again. Icarian cavalrists from whole camp were riding away, back to the darkness of night form which they came. Musketeers regarrisoned trenches and started shooting at retreating raiders, scoring a few hits. Jeremie sat on some box that was laying around and rubbed his face. - Your Exellence, should we chase them? - Asked some officer who ran to the bishop. Janvier just shaked his head. - No, it would take too long for cavalry to prepare horses, and the day when cavalry is outrunned by infantry will be the day in which I go into military brothel. Instead of it, bury the dead and make a report of casualties. - As you wish, Your Exellence! - Officer saluted and ran to his men, telling them new orders. Joachim sat on another box and took jug from his canteen. - Fucking hell. - He said, which caused Janvier to grin slightly. - Well, even if we lose or win, this war will sure be interesting.

Joachim groaned as he was looking through the spyglass. - Any problems, sir? - Rothmagister almost dropped his tool in shock, as someone behind him asked the question. He turned around, only to see one of his most favourite officers - Cornet Godfried Vandergrift - In the name of A- Volkenrose bit his tongue, reminding himself where he was - of Claude, Vandergirft, don't scare me like that! - Forgive me sir. Joachim just waved his hand - It's nothing, really. As to your question... - He looked around. It was dark already and most of the soldeirs were going to beds, save for unfortunate camp guards. Somewhere, further in the camp, religious chanting could be heard. Rothmagister of "Hahnritters" sighed - Honestly, I'm both disgusted and horrified by their religious zeal. - Their? - Godfried pointed his thumb behind his back, to the camp of Claudists. Joachim waved his head with a little smile - No, I meant our enemies. Honestly though, if I were on the other side, I'd say the same about our current allies, even if they are less ardent in their faith. They turned their eyes on the battlefield and beyond it, on Icarian camp. As night falls, fights usually stop and chaos of the battle gives way for silence of the dark. Field was full of dead bodies, abandoned weapons, scouts trying to spy on the enemy and seemingly-dead survivors who had enough of war. Far away, Icarians were celebrating another victorious day. - Will we win this war? - Cornet suddenly asked. - No, unless miracle happens. Best we can do is just delay the inevitable. - So why do we still fight? I can understand the Claudists, but why is our banner fighting? Joachim gave a weak smile to young officer. - That, my dear, you will have to discover on your own, when you're older. Now let's just go back to the camp.

- HAHA! Look how triggered are those tsunfags! - Yelled rothmagister Joachim von Volkenrose, looking at Icarian ranks via spyglass. - I wouldn't be so happy about it - Said bishop Jérémie Janvier - This only means that they will be attacking with even bigger fervor. Ugh, they are like ulcers on beautiful body of humanity. - Well, since beginning they have been concentrated on us, so I dare to say that nothing changed at all. Oh, they're coming again! - BROTHERS! - Bishop shouted - BRACE FOR IMPACT! LET'S SHOW THOSE HERETICS WHAT TRUE BELIEVERS ARE MADE OF! - He raised his rapier to the sky - FOR CLAUDE! FOR PROPHETESS AND OUR SAVIOUR! - FOR PROPHETESS AND OUR SAVIOUR!! - Soldiers replied.
