I've actually only started to get into VNs within the last year and a half or so and have found them rather enjoyable. Especially when they include other elements like strategy. So this series ended up being something of a natural fit for me. Come on now share, what sort of VNs have you been playing? Drop us some titles. All over the place really. Let's see there was one called Grisaia, Katawa Shoujo, MoA and Academy obviously. There were a few others my sister wants me to get one called "Clannad".

Hmmm , favourite games.
At the moment, I'm a sucker for any Turn Based Strategy games with RPG elements. In the past year I think I've played through all the western released Fire Emblems (PoR and RD at least twice) and some JP only, XCOM:EU and EW, Valkyria Chronicles (4 runs already) and I just finished Fe:Fates Conquest.
I love RPGs as well, Bravely Default being the last one I completed, but I played Xenoblade Chronicles before that one (loved it). Add FF-X, 100% FF X-2 to the list. But I also like more action oriented like Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter 4G (my playtime in this game is around the 500h mark) , and fast paced action games like Metal Gear Rising or Shadow Warrior. And I'll admit I played WoW for over 10 years... 4 of them on the "try-hard clean-all-PVE-content ASAP" level.
I've also sinked my fair ammount of hours in Dota 2 and Mount & Blade Warband.
VN's I didn't touch until...more less about a year from now, which was just about when I stopped playing WoW and started looking for single player anime-style games (that's when I found Sunrider , that had the TBS and difficulty elements I love in games) . The last one I played was Over the Hills and Far Away, and the two western released editions of Fault Milestone.
Oh, and finally, I'm a huge Zelda fan. Favourite title being Majora's Mask followed by OoT and ALBW.
Current gaming projects : Have to finish playing..
- FE Fates - Bravely Second - Finish my actual XCOM2 run - Hijack my friends back into MH4U
And then Lib Day and other games are coming out soon, so 2016 is going to be a gloriously busy year.

My upcoming day of gaming (because someone has to say it): I've actually only started to get into VNs within the last year and a half or so and have found them rather enjoyable. Especially when they include other elements like strategy. So this series ended up being something of a natural fit for me. Come on now share, what sort of VNs have you been playing? Drop us some titles. I don't understand JP so I just play whatever's released with a fan TL patch. Beggars can't be choosers. Most recent one I've played is Noble Works, and I'm currently the editor for Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki, so I got a headstart and finished playing that as well. I am pretty hyped for Seinarukana (pre-ordered it already) since I enjoyed Aselia.

There's an update for Darkest Dungeon that should be going up right about now. Then, terror and madness.

Clannad is currently a top my playing list, ive managed to avoid the anime up until now for this very reason. Goodbye free time. Also doing a bit of testing ready for Liberation Day 2.00 which if any of you don't meet your testing quotas I am throwing you in the brig... Hahaha Sengoku rance hahaha. No, seriously, that game is kinda cool with storyline and his own gameplay. Of course its eroge with tons of H-scenes. Anyone has tried that game? I have heard of it but as there are quite a few in the series (26 years corr) I never got round to looking them up. Is this a recommendation to try and put them a few spaces higher on our 'to look into' lists? there are 9 Rance main games so far and Sengoku Rance is the name of (best?) instalment in the series: Rance 7. Sengoku Rance is also only volume that got fully translated to English. Why? Rance games are HUGE, usually 50-100 hours to finish game, so fans dont have enough power to translate it and official translation wont be done soon, cause its developers Alicesoft are greedy c*nts anyway Sengoku Rance is epic game, go play it. (it's in similar style to Sunrider: strategy combined with RPG and VN... and Eroge)
my favorite games on PC: The Witcher 2 & 3, Mass Effect 1 & 2 (ME3 suckz), Dragon Age Origins & Inquisition (DA2 suckz), Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun Dragonfall, Shadowrun Hong Kong, Valkyria Chronicles, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 my favorite games on consoles: The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Xenoblade Chronicles

If I had to pick a favourite game of all time, I guess I'd go with Baldur's Gate II. At the very least, it's certainly the game I played the most, even before I discovered those wonderful things called "mods".
More recently, I'm just getting out from an intense Witcher III phase. The first game disappointed me a bit, and the second was good, but didn't really manage to entirely convince me, but this one? That was the real deal. In recent years, I spent quite a lot of time on the Mass Effect trilogy too, though it had it's fair share of flaws. Still, good times. Older, but I spent quite a few hours on Morrowind and Knights of the Old Republic too. Among japanese games, I have fond memories of Final Fantasy X and Tales of the Abyss, and my introduction to Fire Emblem via Awakening definitely worked out. Honourable mention to Valkyria Chronicles too.
Then, there are RTS. The Total War licence provided good entertainment ; I think the first Rome Total War was the one I enjoyed the most. And there's a strong nostalgia factor when it comes to Command and Conquer : Red Alert.
Finally, while Mount and Blade : Warband was good, the mod Prophesy of Pendor really pushed it in the "great game" category, as far as I am concerned.

Hmmm, right now I'm playing quite a bit of "SC2VN" - it's freely available on Steam, and you're playing a foreigner (male or female, bonus points for that) who moved into South Korea to get into a pro league for Starcraft II. While I'm absolutely not into esports and I only barely touched SC2 (Only played once through it for the story) that game is pretty nice. It's not even a kinetic VN - you have to make a few decisions during the game - and so far the game feels kinda ... well, I'd say, realistic. At least the parts that I can relate too. I never thought that I'd get so much fun out of a completely free VN. When I'm done with that ... well, duh. I still got around 31 other VNs to play, so I'll probably play one of these. On Android I'm playing some idle game at the moment - "Tower of Hero", where you basically go up and up and up having your automatically spawning characters battle more and more and more monsters. And I'm pretty sure it will kill the battery in no time if this goes on ... It's pretty simple, really. Buy a new character, level it up, earn more gold, buy the next character, level ... and so on. Also the game claims I have 803 hours played so far. That has to be a mistake, certainly... Well, maybe not. Probably I'm just addicted.
*Update*
Done with SC2VN, that was a good game. Really liked it. Now, as Magpie forced convinced me into becoming his VN Test Slave I had to test "Divine Slice of Life" and, uh. Well. I got this from a humble bundle together with 9 other games for around 4€, and for that amount of money it's okay. But for the full price of 12€ ... not so much. Incredibly short story, horrible english voice acting (though, even fully voiced sex scenes - sadly these are very awkward) and a pretty simple art style, so, nah ... not worth it. I hope this satisfies your highness, Lord Magpie of VN Land?

Not much into VNs but always love games with a well built world, especially RPGs. Noname already mentioned Balder's Gate 2, and it is fantastic but my favorite is actually Planescape: Torment, because it had crazy rules, bizarre events, very alien NPCs and played around with death like it was a joke but it made flawless internal sense despite that. It has the most unique story I have ever played, every choice is pretty much referenced somewhere with actual meaning, you can find secret party NPCs, hidden story-lines, go digging in your own intestines and you can use your own petrified arm as a club. (In contrary to most forum posts, this spoiler ACTUALLY contains spoilers It doesn't hurt that you can see the impact of your character's previous choices and how if you make similar choices it could inflict those same problems upon the world again. Having a Hiver run from you in terror, despite you not remembering what you did to them helps remind you that choices of what you do have great impact, even if not necessarily to you at that time and make you think how you can solve the mistakes you made before, which is what the game is all about. Its almost a morally good game as strange as it sounds.
The blow that the death you had been lead to believe didn't matter really does quite drastically (and even changes the enemies in the end part) is such a kicker.
You can believe yourself out of existence to win the game!
Other games I have a soft spot for are the old Xwing and Tie Fighter games along with the Jedi knight series (although I strongly disliked force unleashed). Mechwarrior 2 was great fun in multiplayer, if you fit a firefly (30tn) with lots of small lasers, no armor, an aiming computer, jetpack and some heat-sinks, you could actually 1shot heavy assault mecks (120tn+) if you hit them in the cockpit or blow off arms and be so evasive they struggled to hit you! The small lasers were so much more efficient than the large lasers . Fun breaking games (because there is nothing better to liven it up if you've played it a few times): Balder's Gate 2:Get a warior with greatsword grand-mastery and 2handed mastery, then use a spell sequencer to store chill touch (or any weapon replacer) Polymorph him into a sword spider and give him improved haste then use the sequencer and do 1 attack, this restores his weapon to the one he had equipped rather than his spider weapon Now you have a warrior with great AC... haste, and 10 attacks per round with a double handed weapon that looks like a spider! (SwordSpiderMan) Do the same with a rat to give him 90% physical immunity or a slime to give him total magic immunity and just destroy dragons as a critter If you polymorph a dragon into a squirrel, it can still use firebreath and wing-buffet on you. Nothing like seeing your team of deadly warriors and mages being beaten to death and terrified by a grey squirrel. Jedi Academy:In multiplayer there was an awesome bug in Jedi Academy, where if you dueled, and were eaten by a rancor then broke the duel, you could kill the rancor and then have an invisible sprite to go on a murder rampage with! Oblivion:You can stack weakness to magic and poison vulnerability to give yourself infinite or negative stats, so by modifying athletics (the jumpy stat) you can either jump and die of fall damage, or leap over most of Tameril from the top of a mountain and take about 5 damage. You can steal the Grey Fox's hood by reverse pick-pocketing him a helmet, starting combat with a summon and then stealing it from him after he equips the helmet.

King Mags: No no, knight Mirilene. This armor is to ensure maximum agility. It also provides ... service. Miri: Forgive my mistake, my king! *Wanders off to fight the bad VNs* Okay, probably I'm the perverted one here. No offense meant though, I'm just teasing you. Nemjen , actually, you are a bad guy Forcing poor slave Mirilene to play such terrible VN, when you can just check its quality within few clicks on VNDB.org VNDB is acronym for Visual Novel DataBase and they have information about almost any VN you can think of. They also have "score" to rate quality of game and they also allow you to check out sample of images. And for advanced perverts enthusiasts for art they even have to awesome " Show/Hide NSFW screenshots" button (yes, you can taste perv advanced art with it) example: Divine Slife of Life on VNDB (average score 4.07 ? So bad)aside from obvious, VNDB has even more amazing functions. You can even search by tags. Do you fancy these tags " sexual content" + " multiple endings" + " english language" then go ahead and search for similar games, lol

I think the side effects of #1 - playing and #2 - hearing the feedback for Divine Slife of Life are starting to show their side effects. Well, this VNDB page looks like a very good site to use, especially as I have around 30 unplayed VNs in my Steam Library, huh. Thanks for the link! Well, yes. Except the part with the bikini armor. Does entering "kill la kill" into Google image search, stare for 3 seconds and hastily closing the window count? That's good to hear! I just wanted to make sure, y'know? Bad blood because of a silly joke would be the last thing I'd want. Sadly I also played Highschool Possession yesterday. Which felt like it was capitalizing on "Yamada-kun and the 7 witches", atleast partially. But the art ... dear god the art was even WORSE than for Divine Slice of Life. Also no voiceovers here. (Thank god?) That game was even shorter than DSoL ... how this work even scored higher than DSoL on VNDB ... yeah, I don't get it at all. So, how many XP does this yield? Is that enough for level 2 of VN slaying, or even level 3? Also, can I upgrade my armor? Pretty please?

It was either that or ask her to play Highschool Possession, I wanted to help her level up her VN slaying so giving her a low exp quest seemed like the best option. true. Although I wouldnt mark those 2 games as " low exp quests", I would call them " negative exp quests" cause they will make you hate VNs. Better start with something good that will make you look forward... thats my personal oppinion. Pretty please?np, you are welcomed. about Highschool Possession score: You should take any rating on the internet with a grain of salt. Not everybody likes the same stuff. 7 billions of people on the world = 7 billions of different oppinions, you know. HS score 4.5 is pretty close to DSoL score 4.0 (both are really bad VN!) and based on such close rating you cant say " HS is obviously better than DSoL". It would be totally different thing if you were to compare DSoL with Majikoi. Majikoi has score 8.45 and based on that you can say " Majikor is much better than DSoL, its like heaven and hell". (though I wont claim, that you have to love it as much as majority of players did. Everything depends on your tastes.)Long story short: Majikoi will grant you thousands of XP. Its really good VN
- edit - from VNs on Steam I can recommend 2 really good titles (steam is not exactly famous for many good VNs)The Fruit Of Grisaia (link to vndb and if you are interested adult content restoration patch) and If My Heart Had Wings (link to vndb and if you are interested adult content restoration patch)

I actually was really curious on Divine Slice of Life, as it seemed like the kind of trainwreck I would enjoy (also, I admit, fully voice English H-scenes? man, that's a new one), but 12€ did indeed seem to much even for my "how bad it will be" curiosity, even if I kinda sorta liked the art. I must have missed that Bundle though...
On VNs, while majikoi is indeed very good and a relatively nice newbie VN, I don't know if it would be okay to jump directly from OEVNs to that? I mean, it's long, very Japanese and half the jokes are otaku references (brilliant ones, but otaku references nonetheless).
If you really want some fantasy, Fault Milestone is pretty decent. If you really want THE newbie VN, then Katawa Shoujo is always the nº1 choice. If you want some hot manly action of the yaoi kind, MangaGamer has actually released a full yaoi VN including sex scenes and plot (haven't read it myself for obvious reasons, but it sold quite a lot and has good ratings, so I suppose it's pretty good?)

I think there might be some kind of misunderstanding here. I'm not actually new to VN, I just took the burden of saving King Mags curiosity. I played quite a few VN's (and Dating Sims) over the past few years. There have been a few very good ones, while most of them have been laughable and well, there were one or two that I could only describe as utter misogynistic crap. But I'm not blaming anyone here, don't get me wrong. Of course the thing with the rating can't be taken too serious - especially with a very low amount of voters. For example this "Panzermadels" thing which god knows why is in my steam recommendation list is rated 7.67 on VNDB - but that's probably because there are only 3 voters so far. So it's basically the same with HP and DSoL. With very few voters it's just not representative. And most of my post was just ranting because I personally have an extremely low opinion of HP (not that DSoL was much better imho.) Thanks for the recommendations - funnily I have IMHHW already on my Steam Library. That Grisaia thing sounds nice too, but I still got a lot of VN's (and other games...) to play - besides, some people are telling me over and over again to get "Kindred Spirits", so I'll probably get that game next (even though Yuri isn't exactly my thing) to silence these people. @marx The english voice acting was really, really terrible - I basically whined the first 30 minutes of playing at Magpie about it. Go and ask him if you wanna. And well, the sex scenes were awkward anyway, so it's not really a big loss. (In case you know it: Huniepop's VA is like a thousand times better in comparison.) One of the other VN's King Mags "picked" for me is Sickness. Will take a closer look at that soon. Just not today, it's damn late here.

Currently going through a bit of video game burnout - I have plenty to play and have planned to pick up but the motivation is not there. This morning was dedicated to finishing Love at First Sight, nothing too much to say about this one as it is fairly short but the characters each have their own charm and I like that there is an afterword from the author about why he made the game and his thoughts (something that does not occur too much as an in game extra these days). Not too sure how I feel about the whole romantic scar touching thing though, that did cause me to raise an eye brow. I also initially thought that Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed was coming out today (PC) but then when I read the press release again I saw I was a day off, guess that will go onto my list for the bank holiday weekend at the end of this week. So, how many XP does this yield? Is that enough for level 2 of VN slaying, or even level 3? Also, can I upgrade my armor? Pretty please? Miri grew to Lv. 5! Review Attack: 12 (+4) Voice Acting Defence: 14 (+1) Speed Running: 16 (+4) Special Mechanics: 10 (+3) You have unlocked the 'Yohjo Simulator' path. In this kingdom there are no upgrades, only ...service. I think there might be some kind of misunderstanding here. I'm not actually new to VN, I just took the burden of saving King Mags curiosity. I played quite a few VN's (and Dating Sims) over the past few years. One of the other VN's King Mags "picked" for me is Sickness. Will take a closer look at that soon. Well then, tell me about that Neptunia game when you have played it for a bit - I still have to play even one of these games. I'm normally a huge fan of JRPGs, but I kinda never got any time to play Neptunia.
Huh, so many levelups for playing two shitty VNs? Now that's a generous DM, I have to appreciate that. Still, no word on any new armor? Or comes that with the defence bonus? On the other hand, with Speed Running being improved, I doubt it. And what are "Special Mechanics"? That sounds pretty weird here!
Okay, back to being more serious: Somehow I couldn't bring myself to play Sickness, so I put it on a hold and finally gave in to all the people wo urged me to buy Kindred Spirits on the Roof. While I never was much into yuri so far this game might just have sparked some interest in that genre for me. So far I like the game very much. The characters are fleshed out and very likable, the art is really pretty and the voice acting is very good, even though not all scenes are voiced. (Bonus points for Icari's VA voicing one of the characters in Kindred Spirits, even though said character is almost entirely Icari's opposite.) Sadly I'm so far not sure if the dialogue choices you pick really matter - in that regard it felt pretty "kinetic", but maybe I'm wrong. I need to see this through and will probably update later.
On the other hand I got dragged into playing Civilization V with a few friends on the weekend. I have never been much into Civ I have to admit, but playing it together with friends is quite fun.

It's kinda of a kinetic novel. Getting the "correct" answers nets you extra scenes at the end of the month but doesn't really change the plot or future scenes, I think. It's something fairly common in most Liarsoft games (or at least, Gahkthun had it too).

I'm still making my way through Storm Guard. They don't have the end boss yet (the dragon) so it's a bit difficult to tell where things stand but I'm finding character level progression a little truncated. Characters progress from L1 to L5 (with corresponding rise in trained skills) within about 14 days of in-game time, doing 1 dungeon/mission per day. After you hit L5, there doesn't seem to be anything more, apart from upgrading armor, which is a little disappointing. Combat is fun though, especially when facing a tough mix of opponents early on, so I still recommend it for turn based enthusiasts. Also got myself Battle Brothers recently which appears pretty interesting and is rated pretty highly by a good many players. The quality of discussion on their Steam forums actually looks pleasantly high and largely gameplay focussed, so I expect it to be a game of considerable depth.

I highly advice you to go play something better, like Dragon Age Origins, Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2, Divinity Original Sin, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 or 2Battle Brothers: FFS dont write about a game that you DIDNT PLAY. Judging game's grade based on " the quality of discussion on their Steam forums" is absolutely stupid bullsh*t. Thanks

Finished DAO a long time ago and yes it was a great game. Certainly one of the best I've played in terms of storytelling. Played a good deal of DAI as well. Finished NWN1 and 2 so long back ago I can't really even remember the specifics anymore. KOTOR1 yea, finished it more than a decade ago and yes very memorable game. Played it for days at a stretch just to get to the end. Divinity Original Sin, again one of the best turn based titles in recent history. Anyway yes all these are very nice games, AAA quality but I think they are also mentioned so much that many people already know about them.
The 2 games I mentioned aren't favorite/best games by any stretch of the imagination, but they are what I'm currently playing (thread title includes day of gaming) and I think it's worth getting the word out there for smaller/indie titles to other people who might be interested in turn based games. I've done the same in other forums/places for Sunrider.
I also think early access is a good time to give feedback and mould the game into a better product. Not asking people to get it now, but maybe to consider having a look at the finished product when it's launched.
And yes I've read and played enough of Battle Brothers to say they have an interesting system going on. Rather you stop assuming things and jump to conclusions if you have nothing to say. I have no interest in starting arguments on forums, so this will be my last reply to you if you can't remain civil.

And yes I've read and played enough of Battle Brothers to say they have an interesting system going on. see? this comment about Battle Brothers is much better than your previous one. It was wrong on so many levels (I hope I dont have to explain why) Also got myself Battle Brothers recently which appears pretty interesting and is rated pretty highly by a good many players. The quality of discussion on their Steam forums actually looks pleasantly high and largely gameplay focussed, so I expect it to be a game of considerable depth. Early Access reviews are usually not very objective, because only players who are VERY interested are gonna buy Early Access. Thats why its better to wait for launch, where wider range of players will buy a game and then review it. Also I am not very enthusiastic about buying early access or generally pre-ordering unfinished games. At some point everybody will eventually burn their hands with pre-orders (Some examples: developers disbanded and game got cancelled, game got released unfinished!, game was released but full of bugs that were never fixed, game released but it was so bad it wasnt worth the money, etc. etc.) I advise you to avoid doing similar mistakes as well.
if you have already finished those most famous AAA games, then you can try Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun Dragonfall, Shadowrun Hong Kongpure epicness turn based RPG from classical fantasy RPG I can also recommend Drakensang (The Dark Eye) and Drakensang: The River of Time

I am way too different with you guys I think.. I've been playing VSRG, or Vertical Scrolling Rhythm Games. With the help of these games, I usually find many interesting OSTs from various games and anime. Some Notable VSRGs are: • OSU - I am active in this game. Mode: Mania • O2Jam • Guitar Hero • GuitarFreaks • DrumMania • Dance Dance Revolution • Pump It Up • beatmania IIDX (simulator: Lunatic Rave 2) • SOUND VOLTEX (simulator: KSHOOT MANIA) • MUSECA • Etc. etc. etc. Now when did I learned or started playing Visual Novels. I can say that I am still new because I only played few. I do not actually remember when but I was playing Date Simulators first on some gaming websites (not to mention some lewd games at newgrounds :^) ) until I came to vndb.org just to look for Nursery Rhyme by Lump of Sugar (Because I really like its OST that I accidentally watched in YouTube). Then while looking along, I tried to play other VNs such as Narcissu, Brass Restoration, The Flower Girl, Fantasia: Realm of Thanos, The Princess of Fire, and more short VNs. Then I got into the steam. Played Dota2 at first and then got bored on some time and looked for free VNs. I played Sepia Tears, Voices from the Sea, Written in the Sky, Everlasting Summer, Frosty Kiss and finally.... SUNRIDER! man, I really like space/galaxy stuffs so I really like the game itself. Not to be funny but I always dream to become an astronaut (which is impossible for me despite of my body and height ;; and far away..). Enough for that silly dream. So yeah, I am mainly a VSRG gamer and I am quite new here. Please take care of me
