Introduction:.
Greetings everyone, i am Dextix, and i would like to think of myself as a fan of the sunrider series. In the current market of VN's sunrider offers a really satisfying storry and even combat wihch makes it unique in the market. As a fan of space operas this game series gives me what i like (Just replace the burly spacemen with waifus).
However, the last game, the 3rd game of the sunrider series, Liberation day, was bad. It had good sound, good art, good and improved combat. But the story suffered, a lot. It was rushed, it had no content, and the plot was all over the place. I see where the writer wanted to go, i see the plotpoints, i see what he wanted to do. But he failed, the job was sloppy, the story unsatisfying. People on steam only started to like it because it seemed like the creators of the game listened to their feedback and they thought that the imporved story is better than the last story. This doesnt mean that they completely liked the story.
Dont get me wrong, i love the game and the story, that is why i am critisising it. Because i see potential in the story. Potential that the writter just simply doesnt use. And forgive me, but seems like he is too lazy to use. In one year you can write faaaaaar more than what was in Liberation Day and in faaaaar better quality. I bought the game thinking that it will be good, just like the last two. But in the end, i was dissapointed. My money was wasted, because the product, was simply not worth it, since the free products were far better. I actually thought that the writer was replaced because of blatant disrespect that was shown to the characters and the story of sunrider.
I will analyse, critisise and give ideas on the main 3 sunrider games. I give these suggestions for the future installments or possible GOTY edition, where everything will b ebundled up and upgraded as a product. (You get all sunrider games, expand and connect all of them into one and charge how you see fit). This would be the best as it would increase the products quality, popularity and would bring money to the creators.
Analysis:
Cera:
Ah yes, our captains homeworld. Ok, so what? I found this incredibly strange. Our first moments in the game start in Cera and we have flashbacks to it. But why should we care? We are given almost no reason besides its the MC's home planet.
What if during crew interactions (All of them are from cera) people would celebrate some holidays of Cera, maybe they would remember the good times they had on the planet before the war. Adding some things to the planet. And while yes, academy deals with it, it is not a main game, it is also paid for. You should not have to pay extra for important to story and story development information.
Giving more characterisation and content to the planet would cause people to care about it more and give substance to the characters. Remember mass effect 3 and earth? How people had to leave or fight on a dying planet? Their planet? Occupied planet? This is the kind of shit that is needed to create good stories and even some drama.
Crewmembers:
Now lets start with the crew. As you can read in the title, this piece will be on Cera and Sunrider and the potential they had and how it was squandered and could be possibly fixed in the possible updates of the game. I will start from the beggining. The beggining of the series was pretty good, it did its job. It introduced the main characters, the setting, the ship you will command, your waifus and some backstory to everyone.
However, it could have been even more fleshed out. While yes, hunting waifus is important for this game, it is not the only part. That is what i like about it, it can be both be a serious story and a waifu game. One big problem i have found is that the crew basically does not exist. This is a big wasted opportunity. Imagine for a minute, if you could talk not only to your waifus, but the crew. The engineers, the bridge officers, gunners.
It uncovers so many possibilities. You can have more interaction fleshing out of secondary characters and at the same time, fleshing out of Kayto and the waifus based on their own interactions with the crew members. This could also include events such as birthdays, result in friendships or even romances in some cases. The crew of a ship should feel like a familly, a tight knitted group that will die for each other.
Because lets be real, i doubt that many people cried over sunrider and the loss off it together with its crew. We had really no reason to care about the crew or even the ship much because of how hollow both of those were.
As some examples of possible effects of the crew on characters i can give some things i thought up in like 5 minutes that would not be that hard to implement, especially in a VN. As an examples i will use light/dark comparisons depending on how the writter would want the story go, a more fun or a darker story. These scenarios would occur if crew members die.
Chigara:
Light – Chigara is affected by the deaths of the crew and gets braver. She wants to prevent deaths of her friends, so she focuses on her work even more, asking help from people and turning into a more fleshed out character.
Dark – Chigara is negatively affected by the deaths, maybe some friends of her in engineering died from an explosion. She closes down, maybe even has a mental breakdown with which Kayto ir Asaga have to deal with. Let us remember, she is the most innocent of them all, all she wants to do is to have a bakery. Even though she is a prototype, it takes a long time for her to actually realise that, so before it this kind of scenario could happen.
Asaga:
Light - Asaga with her innocence and idealism could be the beacon of light in the darkness of reality. She would be the one to cheer everyone on, for them to keep fighting, to be brave, for their friends. She could be the one who even helps Kayto the most with his PTSD(Will be expanded on in other thread).
Dark - Asaga, gets harder, her innocence and naivity are gone. She becomes a hard ♥♥♥ warrior, an embodiment of justice, of cold hard justice that does not care about the details. This could also tie in with her being a princess and the Sharr and even with the death of the king of Ryuvia. Her suspicions in the third part of the game and even her view of Chigara would make sense then, she would be more easily corrupted by that Sharr part of her soul(Expanded in another thread).
Effects on gameplay:
All of this could also have effects on gameplay. With the loss of your crewmates the pilots could become different or have branching paths.
Maybe Chigara refuses to go out in the field, but makes improvements to the ship and the Ryders. Or she decided to take a more fighting than supporting role with unique abilities
Maybe asaga become more reckless by having more AP but less HP, or the opposite. Or maybe as a beacon of hope she receives something akin to an "Inspire" effect which could improve allies around her.
Further effects on the story:
This could also result from or because of certain choices you have made, or even make more choices available. For example remember the decision of having ryders either go help the cargo ship or keep with Sunrider in the first game? This could have negative effects on the crew if ryders are send out, possibly resulting in someones death.
Can everyone see the implications of two seemingly trivial things? Interaction with the crew and the pilots and fleshing out of the world of Cera? 2 seemingly trivial things could result in such storylines and could be explored. These interactions and reactions to and with the crew could even result in conflict or funny and positive situations where everyone become friends or family and get closer together.
In the end this would even be a good feelings generator. If you know more about Cera, its traditions, way of living, you will care more about the planet, you will feel more attached, not only your character Kayto, but you yourself. The same goes for the crew. If you know them on a personal level, and if they die (Like in the end of the third game), it would have bigger impact on you and even Kayto, they could make him more hardened and feel stress and even get PTSD (Will discuss this in other thread).
Because as a ship captain he is not used to seeing people in front of him die, like in the scene in the slums where he gets “saved” we can see his panic and confusion. He is not a frontlines soldier. He is a commanding officer of a ship and every ship kill is impersonal to him, because he shoots ships, not individuals. Having people die under his command would improve him as a character and would show the hardships of command.
Both you and the character would get more attached to the crew, and experience their deaths harder. The same goes for other people. For example Chigara and Asaga, both of them are quite innocent and idealistic. And then you could go into either the light or the dark route.
Because currently, the games lack this "soul" so to say. Dont get me wrong, they are good games. But they can be a lot better, they can become high profile games in the end that people will like more and more. They can become trendsetters in the VN market showing how good storylines can be done.
Ending:
With this I would finish my analysis of two possibilities for the Sunrider games that could be explored in possible DLCS or expansions on the games that could result in really good story arcs or as improvements to the current ones. Any feedback is welcome, and if someone from the creators sees this, just consider these things and whether or not their implementation is possible.
I will continue my analysis of other subjects in other threads.
