If you open the Research or Store menu while in the middle of a conversation, any selections made will revert if you try to backtrack the text (scroll mouse wheel up) afterwards. In some cases, the Research/Store menu will come up while trying to backtrack, showing the original Intel/Funds quantities and with all the purchases unmade, but the reversion happens even if the menu doesn't comer up.

I've verified this behavior in both regular and Denpa versions during the VN segment after the 1st battle.
