I posted this on the old hyperspace website then noticed there is a new website. So I copy it here.
LANGUAGE FUNCTION
If there is still someone remember me, I made my personal translation into Chinese.
Since the Liberation Day has released and I just finished it yesterday, looks like it’s time to pick up this translating thing again.
In Liberation Day, Japanese language is added. The inbuilt language selection is much better than what I did in the language mod. I have no knowledge in this renpy language and many people told me my language mod did not work. That programming part was beyond my knowledge so I just pretend that did not happen. Now I come up a new idea to solve this problem, provided I could get help from game maker.
What if add a third language “Custom” as a choice, and make a new file “Language” where translators could simply edit it to set custom language related definitions. Then translators only need to let renpy generate a translation file, set fonts at “Language” file, finish the translation and throw that file into “Custom” language folder and tell users “download my translation file and select custom language, done”.
If possible, this could help translators who are poor programmers like me a lot. I don’t need to stare at the dizzy renpy program, trying to find a place to add my made up language change lines, and find it not working at all. Furthermore, if this function could also be added in “Mask of Arcadius”, that could be the best news I could hear this year. Since Liberation Day has start as a new game, it is time for me to make a “Sunrider Introduction Chapter Translation Complete Edition”, while I still have no idea how to solve the language selection part.
TRANSLATION
Above concludes the title, and following are some of my problems in translating.
This part is about the inconsistent in English and Japanese lines. A same line may has some different meanings between languages. If this happens, which one is more “Official”? I don’t know Japanese language so I hope the answer is “English”
Some examples:
Icari call Kryska as soldier boy, and the Japanese word for that is 優等生. I don’t know Japanese, but luckily as a Chinese I could recognize those Chinese characters and that word means “Good student”. Well since I have never seen the phrase “soldier boy” before maybe they do have the same meaning? For this one I will translate based on Japanese.
Another example is how people call Ava. In my search, Google told me “Commander” is a naval rank equal to lieutenant colonel in army. That means people call her rank rather than occupation. However the Japanese word is 副長 which means vice president generally, or chief officer since they are on a ship. In Japanese lines people call her occupation rather than her rank.
So how people call each other? Or did I just mistaken the word “Captain” and “Commander” as rank, and actually they are not ranks at all? They call Shields “Captain” because he is the captain of the ship, not because his rank is “Captain” which equal to colonel in army? Well this is a trivial thing but confused me for a while. Ahhhhh who started using the same word both as an occupation and a naval rank in English? That guy should pay for my lost brain cells although he’s dead thousands of years ago!
