Kayto stared at the hologram emitter. Ava had scheduled a conference to start 10 minutes ago
and still the Alliance commander was a no-show. Kayto flicked his pen with irritation, intently keeping his facial expression neutral in anticipation of the hologram to flicker with a figure.
The door to his office slid open and Ava walked in. She had come to check on the meeting, but noticed that Kayto was sitting sullenly in front of it.
“Sit up straight, you have to make the best impression you can in front of Grey,” Ava stated imperatively.
Kayto’s eyes darted at the mention of Grey, before he reminded himself it was the admiral’s son.
“It is some miracle that the Alliance didn’t declare all-out war on us after the incident, and we are going to have to work extra hard to keep our relationship. You said it yourself, we cannot defeat PACT without the Alliance.”
“We cannot defeat PACT with the Alliance either,” Kayto retorted angrily.
“Not this again. You got Cera back, and all you have left is the duty to defend it. Nobody wanted it to happen this way, but getting your heart involved has only led to this suffering. I’m sorry Kayto, but someone has to say it, you cannot keep going on like this,” Ava said sharply, although her eyes gave a hint of sympathy.
Kayto stayed silent, keeping himself from an outburst. Ava was only trying to help, even though he knew there was nothing she could do or say to give him any peace. Only a time machine would have the potential to do that.
The hologram flickered with a familiar face. Kayto had never seen Rear Admiral Michael Grey, but he was a spitting image of his father. Michael repositioned himself to put his full body into view.
“I am speaking with Kayto Shields, Captain of the Ceran Space Force?” Michael said flatly, although a tinge of disappointment seemed present in his voice.
“It was Captain. I’d technically be Vice Admiral, but I still prefer to be called Captain,” Kayto responded, although he was sure Michael was deliberately trying to talk down on him. He could tell Michael was still very angry about his father, and he was sure Michael blamed him for the incident.
“Riiiiight… very well Captain. I suppose you have been briefed on why I’m here?” Michael asked.
“You want me to fight some fight near planet Cradle. Heavy PACT and Pirate forces, plus a few unknown ones. Your veteran commanders have been getting shredded and you want me to pick up their pieces,” Kayto said smugly. Ava put her palm on her face, embarrassed at Kayto’s lack of diplomacy.
“There are few veterans in the Alliance, because they have been dying trying to secure this space. You would be wise to show some respect,” Michael stated angrily. He beamed some photographs of the fighting to Kayto’s emitter. Kayto was flooded with images of Battlecruisers and Carriers being melted, their hulls cracked into many pieces and energy blasting all around their interiors and exteriors. The most shocking of which saw five cruisers eliminated seemingly by a singular blast that had detonated in the centre of their formation.
“What do you expect me to do about it? Your biggest ships are getting pummelled, so how do you suppose I would do any better?” Kayto asked dismissively.
“If there’s anything the Alliance respects about the Neutral Rim, it’s that admirals and commanders can only go so far. Our admirals and commanders can deal with the various logistical and tactical challenges of most of the fronts, but they seem ill suited for the situation at Cradle. We need a combatant that can defeat impossible odds and you fit the profile.”
“What do you want done there?” Kayto asked impatiently.
“Straight to the point? We need you to destroy their supply lines, and get as much information as possible. We have intelligence that the main PACT base is located near planet Deumbra, while the pirates assisting them belong to an asteroid base near it with polar coordinates 67ly, 0.75pi. Your science officer will be given more accurate details from our own team. Speaking of which, how is she?” Michael inquired. It appeared that the alliance replacement and Michael had some history that Kayto had not been informed of.
“Sierra? She is certainly a great engineer, thank you for the donation,” Kayto teased. Michael shrugged, and turned off the emitter.
“Orders Captain?” Ava asked, hopeful that a little of Kayto’s glimmer had returned with his new assignment.
“Warp to Cradle as soon as possible. I want to find out about those unknown forces as much as you do,” Kayto ordered, gesturing to Ava to follow him to the bridge.
