Been toying with this idea for a bit but starting to put it together, going to [try] and make it into a mod which would add a few new ships - [The Galactica and purchasable Viper / Raptor vehicles] along with a handfull of new ship enemies - [Cylon Basestar, Raider and Heavy Raider] with Starbuck or Adama being potential 'Hero' Pilots [pending some sprites, though i can make those i imagine]
The idea is fairly simple, once you've picked up Asaga and Chigara and deal with the pirates you'll have a new secondary mission on the Galaxy map, this mission would be focused around an encounter with the Galacticas civilian fleet [Cylons caught them off guard with the battlestar away] so you would defeat the cylon ships, get thanked and then encounter the actual Galactica. I have most of the encounter scripted out, though i feel the reason the Galactica would 'shack up' with you is somewhat flimsey - [The idea is Shields would promise them a home on Cera if they helped, but then they could easily find a home in Alliance space without his help and Adama would never leave the civilian fleet unprotected to go around with the Sunrider ... Might be able to get around that by having the Pegasus stick with the civilian fleet]
Another scenario is to have the encounter revolve around 'new caprica', the colony they set up half way through the show. Pact would discover this and want to take it over for themselves, so you'd show up, save it and promise to help guarantee Colonial independence some how [sharing ryder tech? shields?] This might be the more 'realistic' encounter scenario of the two
Why so early in the story? Well to let you get as much use out of the new units as possible really

Right now i'm doing some model work on interior spaces and getting models for the appropriate ships ready to be put in. For modifications to the Sunriders internals so far it's simple BG change, essentially replacing one of the empty unused mech hanger spaces for 'stacked' viper storage bays

One of the biggest things i've been trying to work out is balance. How exactly to keep the Vipers and raptors 'competitive' with Pact Ryders, so balance concerns
- I'm not sure on the caliber of the Anti-Air weapons in Sunrider but they certainly seem significant larger than the vipers cannons. While this viper model i'm using is just for scaling purposes just now while i get a better one [and do some remodeling of one of the Sunriders Hangers to hold Vipers] it demonstrates the disparity quite well
One idea to sort of balance it is to have different upgrades / versions of the viper, this upgraded version would be equipped with Sunrider-Verse weapons [such as the Alliance infantry sniper, for example] but this has alot of problems. The first being that those weapons would likely be just too big / heavy for the vipers to carry effectively while recoil would possibly be far too much for the small fighters.
A different potential way to balance it out i think might be to have Viper units be 'squadrons' rather than individual fighters. 3-5 of them versus a single Ryder may not be the most unfair fight in the world and wouldn't require any modifications to said vipers.
For the galactica herself i'm thinking of balancing towards a heavy hitting close combat ship, focus on kinetics and flak but is equipped with a handful of rockets.
