Cell was dark and small, it only had a pallet and wooden bucket in corner of the room. Light was scarce. His previous cells were comfier, but after his resistance to questioning and a few tries of escape, he was moved into the worst dungeons of Royal Castle of Ikarogród. He has already accepted death, ever since he got caught. After all, he sacrificed himself to save most of his people. one day, he will either tell Icarians everything on tortures, or they will get tired of him and then he will end up on a scaffold. Suddenly, door opened and light from a torch blinded him. So that was it? Took them some time. - Joachim? Was he dreaming or hallucinating? He slowly got up and covering his eyes, he walked to the voice from light. - Heidrun... is it really you? Or are you an angel, who came to save me from the darkness? - Of course it's me, you old bastard! She hugged him and they started to cry.

Small clouds of smoke were slowly rising from pipe to the skies. Sunlight was falling mercilessly on the earth. Green fields of grass stood still, from time to time waving gently from slight breeze. He was standing on a terrace, resting on a balustrade, smoking pipe and looking on the horizon. On a bench behind him were laying few written pieces of paper. On them was laying a pen. The atmosphere was quite dull. - Is something wrong, Charlie? - said a soft voice behind him. He turned around to see his wife. His weird look caused her to explain herself further - Recent days, you do nothing in your free time but standing here and staring nowhere. You even started to smoke! - Ah, this. Don't worry, it's temporary. And he continued to look at the horizon. Marietta looked on him with care and sadness. Then she noticed his notes. She went over them all. There were several stories, each one of them ended in mid-sentence and they had nothing in common. - Do you have problems with writing? Charles sighed. - I've lost soul for writing. The beginning, the end and few scenes in-between are going well, but everything else turns into a tasteless pulp at best. Fact that I'm quite lazy person and time is constantly passing doesn't help either. On top of that, as you've seen, I am working on few projects at once, and all of them must be done in time. Or abandoned - He added after a short while.

- You betrayed us! - shouted Diederik de Cheuland, pouring out blood from his sliced throat with every vowel - Coward! - roared Godefroy Traver, with gaping hole in his stomach - You are just delaying inevitable, you goddamn fool! Icarians will have your skin soon - propheted fiercely Emilien de Wotrein, with broken blade of estock stuck in his chest - You will burn in deepest depth of hell, heretic! - denounced Jeremie Janvier, with his face blue and in battered armor, arrows sticking out of every gap and broken end of spear in his guts. They were all flocking to him, tugging for his coat. Behind them, he saw Claude. He has never met her, but he was sure it was her. - Why did you abandon me? - she asked with calm sadness in her voice. He looked into her deep pink eyes filled with sadness. The longer he stared into them, their pink colour changed more into deep red, red glow over the burning city of Ocrinhaven. Lords' voices dissolved into desperate cries of citizens. Scared people flocked to him, begging him for help. Crown Marshal of Icarin, Łucjan Czarnogłów, towered over people on his white horse. With a smug grin he slowly aimed his pistol at him. He couldn't move, blocked by scared mass of people, tugging his coat, crying to him with fear and desperation. Marshal slowly pulled the trigger. Pistol cracked. - Tjeetje! - shouted Jurgen van Rompuy, waking up from this nightmare. He looked around himself. He was still in his cabinet in Ocrinhaven. Jurgen looked through the window. It was early morning - the sky was still dark. Occasional parties have already ended and it was too early for normal people to go out. The only place where life was going on was in port. He didn't want to sleep anymore - worst possibility was that the nightmare would come again. Jurgen dressed up in dark coat, hat and purple cravat. On his belt he put his rapier. He took his cane and went on stroll to the port. He looked around, admiring the charm of merchant apartments. Guards who spotted him saluted on his view. Soon, he was in port of Ocrinhaven, one of the biggest and busiest ports of the United Provinces. Even now, occasional ships were coming to port, their crews yearning for land and charms of city life. He spotted one ship coming to port, bigger than most ships berthed in port. Then he noticed a purple anchor on its' sails. Jurgen ran quickly to the pier to which the ship was going. When he was close, van Rompuy saw the name of the vessel - "Verwoesting".

Soldiers were cheering. From the crowd, a hooded figure on a horse emerged. - It was a good speech - female voice said from under the hood. Marshal looked with a shock into the pink eyes. - Your Divinity, I... - He wasn't sure what to say. That he was grateful for his promotion? That it was unsafe for her to be there? That he will do everything to protect her? - I decided to be with my people - she said, as if to solve his consternation - After all, this may be the final battle of this war. I should be with my believers. If they fail, I'd die anyway, either slaughtered in my chambers days after the siege, or here, on this very battlefield. - But you can die by a stray bullet! The outcome of this battle won't matter anyway if you die by accident! - said a horseman in red cape with heart emblem. Musketeer of Prophet Guard, and judging by golden brooch with three attached plumes on his hat, he was no one else but Leopold Pierre, commander of Guard. - Then it is your job to ensure that I will survive the battle - said Claude with a smile. This made the commander cringe in fury, but he couldn't just shout at his very leader and supervisor. So he just gritted his teeth and clinched his fists, averting his eyes from Archprophetess.

Emilien De Wotrein looked at the battlefield. Thankfully, the landscape was more favourable for them - river and hills. Icarians shouldn't be able to charge with full force. Technically, they weren't able to do that at Elst, and yet look what happened there! said voice in his head It was a complete massacre! De Wotrein gripped tighter his mace. Emilien looked at the weapon in his hand. Incrusted with silver and pink topazes, it was a symbol of Marshal of Claudin. After they hastly retreated to Angery, Emilien learnt that Marshal de Dressau was murdered by Icarians. Claudin was without Marshal, and it was a bad thing. So Archprophetess promoted him to this rank, entrusting him entirety of army. He still felt uncomfortable with that. Sure, he had been commanding large forces before, but now entirety of this war depended on him. And situation looked bad, with Icarians marching straight for the capital. Lady de Trilelo demanded that fight would take place outside of Angery, in order to avoid losses in population. Besides, wall of Angery weren't in good shape - the last time they were renovated was 50 years before the war. Marshall took his spyglass and looked at approaching Icarian forces, with Crown Marshall Łucjan Czarnogłów on front of the column. it reminded Emilien of Battle of Elst. After they managed to defeat one army, losing many people, came another one. Initially they resisted the attack, until Icarians under command of Czarnogłów came. Turns out he changed his mind about recapturing Vospad and decided to concentrate on Claudin. Van Rompuy fled from the battlefield with most of his men when he saw Crown Marshall. De Cheuland decided to cover his retreat, charging at chasing Icarians. Traver led his "final charge", riding straight on Czarnogłów hussars. He died first, pierced by Icarian lance. His men soon followed the suit. The charge almost didn't do anything at all. Almost, as it gave time for De Wotrein to retreat. However, Marquis' forces were chased by Akiin cavalry. When it seemed they would catch Claudists, came bishop Janvier. He alone rode on his horse, with his cane in one hand and broadsword in another one. He was throwing spells left and right, hacking whenever someone came close. Akii riders concentrated on him. His horse collapsed dead on mud, pierced with arrows like a hedgehog. Jeremie stood there nonetheless, brave, determined. One arrow pierced his knee. Other one hit gap in his armor on his shoulder. One of the riders threw a lasso on him. Rope tightened on his neck, but didn't strangle him, as he was wearing a steel gorget. Then the rider galloped with his horse. Janvier collapsed and was being pulled on the ground, while other riders were shooting at him from bows. Emilien wanted to help him, but he was runnig out of time. Icarians were finishing off rest of Traver's people and they rode on other targets. Marquis and his people ran away. Diederik de Cheuland didn't have that much luck. He stayed on the battlefield to the end, until his thoat was sliced with a sabre. Bishop Jeremie Janvier died from interior wounds caused by broken bones and exterior ones caused by arrows, bullets and a hit with a spear that finished him off. And here he was now. The only surviving general of Battle of Elst. Marshal of Claudin, Emilien Barthelemy de Wotrein, commanding all of Claudist forces in Battle of Angery. He failed Janvier, Traver and De Cheuland. Now he will fight a person who was responsible for deaths of all of them. This was a chance to redempt himself. - Soldiers! - He shouted to the ranks of people behind him. - Attention! Claudists stood up and looked at De Wotrein. He gulped. Now he only had to not fuck this up. - I will be honest with you. We are losing this war. The heretics are standing not even a day from the capital. If we lose here, then we will lose entire war. Icarians will pillage our cities, burn our villages. They will murder our children and rape our wives! They will make slaves of our entire nation! - He paused for a beat. All soldiers were silent and looked him with full attention. They listened to every his word. - If we win here however, we will push them back into their lands. We will avenge our fathers, sons, brothers and friends! We will regain everything that was taken from us lawlessly! We will show them what Claudists are made of! We will show them that Kayto is with us! We will show those feathered faggots that Claudin cannot be defeated! FOR CLAUDE, BROTHERS! - FOR CLAUDE! FOR OUR PROPHETESS AND SAVIOUR!

- Oh dear, can I know what happened to you, sir Volkenrose? - asked Henryk. Currently, they were all in lord's hall, eating supper. As main course there was a large bear, hunted not so long ago in local forests. Von Volkenrose was sitting next to his host, facing King Isidolde. As it turned out, Henryk was a great admirer of Hahnreitern. He told Joachim that Hahnreitern actually saved his life from Chigarling cavaliers with brave charge during Battle of Cereglio. Joachim actually remembered the battle. Icarians were losing on right flank, where all of Chigarling cavalry charged. It was actually a miracle Icarians even held there. Joachim charged in their backs and broke Chigarit morale, causing them to retreat from the battlefield. He remembered that Icarian commander said that he would never forget it, but Joachim ignored it, thinking that they probably will never see each other again. And yet here he was, sitting as a honourable guest next to person whom he saved, asked about bruise under his eye. - Ah, this is nothing, just a mere accident. - I honestly think that somebody hit you - said Icari with small smile. - Maybe. Even if it is like you said, I don't want to talk about it. - Well, if that's your wish - said Dmochowski and quickly changed subject - What do you want to do now, when you're done with Claudists? In the meanwhile, bit further, Robert and Heidrun were eating the bear and chatting about many things. - Back in the past I used to hunt as well - reminisced Assendorp - However, I used a crossbow to do it. My father was quite conservative in that matter. He claimed that hunting with guns is too easy and unfair towards animals. I would have never thought of hunting a bear without a group as well. - Really? With your body I thought you actually killed them with bare fists! Heidrun laughed, she rolled up her sleeve and flexed her arm, causing large bicep to appear. Some people around looked at her in shock, some in disgust. - Wow, it's actually bigger than mine - Commented amused and surprised Robert, while drinking his mead. Joachim and Henryk were discussing the former's journey. - I will be blunt, we desperately need someone who knows Icarian - said Rittmeister. Lord rubbed his chin with hand. - Well, if I were younger, then I would go with you, but I'm too old for such journeys and I don't want to leave my lands without care. I have my son, of course, but I think he's bit too young and unexperienced to actually rule. Well, I could actually send him with you, but I can't decide for him in that matter. - Besides, what will happen if Robert dies? - asked Danuta Dmochowska, Henryk's wife - Mercenary life is very dangerous, after all. - War is dangerous, yet he will have to take part in one sooner or later. - But this is completely another thing! - Ah, whatever - Henryk decided to save himself another argument and turned to Joachim - Well, I will see if I can do something for you in that matter, but I can't promise anything. - Don't get me wrong Robert, but I don't really like bear meat. - Suddenly said Heidrun. - Oh? And why is that? - It's too hard and fat for my taste. Besides, I barely feel any meat because of those spices. Seriously, I can't believe how someone can waste so much of them and sleep well after that. You even add it to the mead! - Well, such are beauties of living so far on the east. Being so close to Julian Empire, who maintain trade contact with such nations as Sasamit Empire or rajas of Nemuin, prices of things from there are cheaper here than, let's say, in Asagia. Even if it slowly changes with Asagians, Cosetti and Solarians' colonialstic advances. - Huh. I really like that sliced meat with sauerkraut. - That's bigos. - Ah. Suddenly, shouts erupted from another part of table. - How can you be so stubborn!? - shouted one of drunken nobles - It is almost as clear as the sun that Mikan swords are the best melee weapons ever made! - Gezeik! - retaliated Vandergrift, who was even more drunk than his opponent - I seriously cannot believe how one can be such imbeciel and still be able to talk! Mikan sabres, they are not swords by the way, are one of the most retarded weapons created! Even I could break one of those with bare hands! - Do you even know anything about this world? - I've travelled bigger part of it in 4 years than you have ever! - Probably in stomach of that travelling whore that your father fucked! Vandergirft was done. He threw his mug on the noble that offended him and leaped on him with fists. Soon, Hahnreitern and Icarians started to intervene, at first trying to stop both of the fighter, but soon they started to fight among each other. - AWANATURA!! - shouted one noble, drunken with alcohol and chaos. As if it was a magical spell, the hall soon turned into one big battlefield. Robert and Heidrun left from hall and soon they found themselves on a balcony. Full moon shone bright in the sky, soaking the world in silver light. - It's so beautiful here - commented Heidrun. - And calm- added Robert. They stood there silently, looking in the sky. - You know what? - asked Robert - I really like you. - Uh, thanks. I also really like you. You are the nicest person I've ever met. - And you the most beautiful one. Silence became bit awkward then.

Henryk led them to guest chambers, placing Hahnreitern together in one room. - I'll probably be in a main hall, if you want anything from me. They waited for him to go away far enough. Then Heidrun roared, while Joachim covered his face with hand and sighed. - Ugh, come on, it's just a courtesy, he was just raised to behave so - Joachim tried to calm down Heidrun, but with no result. - AAAARGH! He sees that I'm a goddamn soldier, yet he treats me like he would do with every stupid noble girl, that has nothing in her mind but needlework! - Maybe it's because deep inside, every woman is like that? - asked Godfried. Joachim and Heidrun looked at him with shock. - What? - asked Assendorp bluntly - Well - Vandergrift wanted to say something more, but lieutenant just grabbed him by collar and raised him to look right into his eyes. - WHAT DID YOU SAY?! - she shouted in his face. Godfried got quite nervous. - Um, uhhh, well, she treated you like a woman, and you are a woman, right? Her fist seemed not to agree with that. Godfried landed on ground with bleeding nose. - Fucking hell, Aseendorp, what the fuck are you doing! - Rittmeister shouted and grabbed Heidrun on her arm. He turned her around and looked into her red face with eyes welling up with tears of anger and embarrasement. She brushed off his hand and headed to door. However, Joachim grabbed her by the hand - Where do you think you're going now? Assendorp hit him too, like she did with Vandergrift. It stunned Joachim for few seconds, but he stood still. Heidrun ran away. - Fucking hell, Vandergrift, you may be smart, but fuck me if you know how to talk with people! - said von Volkenrose after few seconds of silence.
Robert Dmochowski arrived at the Smoczy Dwór, back from hunting, with a dead bear. - Welcome back, sir. I see the hunt went well. - said guard to him after he entered the castle. - Yes, thank you. - Um, sir, we have guests right now in the castle. A banner of pludrak cavalry and some of our nobles. I heard the King is among them. - Interesting - Robert raised his eyebrows. - Well, whatever, but thank you for the news. - At your service, sir! He arrived on the middle castle and left his horse there. With a grunt, he took bear's body on his back and started walking to higher castle. People were staring at him, among them Robert saw the pludraks the guard has told him about. As he was reaching the bridge between middle and higher castle, he realised that it was a bad idea to carry the bear alone. However, he could not give up now, when all people were looking at him! With a painfully looking face, he made it to higher castle. He was safe from commoners' eyes. Dmochowski put the bear on the floor and sit on it. Now he had to carry that damn animal to the kitchen. Like hell he'll do that. Then he noticed a large woman sitting on the stairs. She was looking at him now. - Uhm, excuse me, can you help me carry this bear to the kitchen? - he asked in Avanii, the only foreign language he actually could speak. Well, there was also Chigarot, but she looked far from women from there. The woman was looking at him for few second, but then she got up and walked to him. She grabbed the animal for its' back legs. Robert grabbed front ones and rested most of the weight on his back. They walked through some time before they arrived to the kitchen. They gave the bear to the chef and left the kitchen. Robert rested on the wall in front of the kitchen door and was taking deep breaths. - Thank you... I wouldn't do it... without your help. - You're welcome. You hunted it for yourself? - Yes. - What weapon did you use? Robert took his rifle from his arm and showed it to the woman. She instantly got interested. It was a gun like no one else. Beautiful, richly decorated, with wheel lock and rifled barrel. - It's called "Tarczogrodzianka", or just "Tarczogród Rifle" - Robert explained - They produce many weapons like that. In fact, they have entire guild dedicated to production and decoration of firearms in this style. In addition to being beautiful, they are also one of the deadliest handguns ever made. They were originally created for hunting birds, but they also make versions for big game or military use. - Can I try it? - The woman asked. - Of course, we have a shooting range here. Can I know your name, by the way? - Heidrun. And yours? - Robert - he extended his arm to Heidrun. She grabbed it and they shaked hands.

Another day of journey was passing. Icari turned to Archibald.
- Jest tu gdzieś w okolicy miejsce by się zatrzymać? Archibald took his map and looked on it. He was staring on it with attention for some time, when he suddenly found something and smiled. - A i owszem! Prosze spojrzeć, Wasza Boskość. He handed map to Icari and pointed to some location. She smiled too. - No proszę, Smoczy Dwór. - she turned to Joachim, who was observing them for some time, thinking that he should finally learn some Icarian - We'll be travelling a bit longer than usual, I hope you don't mind it. Not that it would change anything, of course. - No, not at all. - Good. Hopefully, your patience and endurance will be rewarded. - Soldiers! - Joachim turned to his men - I know you're quite tired, but we have to travel bit more for our rest! - What could it be? - wondered Heidrun loud, to bolster soldiers' morale - Maybe another tavern like the one where we met Icarians? - Probably. I think it's worth the trouble if those cunts are willing for another hours of horse riding. Well, I guess we won't be sleeping on the ground tonight. After three more hours of riding, they finally saw what it was. - Well, well, well - said Volkenrose under his nose. Heidrun just gasped. Godfried started to write something in his notebook. It was a castle. No, a palace would fit better. It's not enough though. The best way to describe that place is "gothic palace-fortress, with a bit of cathedral feel". The castle walls had two rows and were thick and made of red brick, roofs of their towers were tall and ended with metal spires. Behind walls there was main building of the castle, with many towers sticking out of main block. Windows there were high and sharp ended. All of it was surrounded with wide moat. - Smoczy Dwór. Or as you'd say it "Dragon Hall" - said Archibald, not without satisfaction, seeing their amazement. - This is where we will be sleeping tonight. As Icarians and Hahnreitern were riding to Dragon Hall, Archibald was talking about its' history. The castle was built by one of the former Crown Marshalls of Icarin, Kazimierz Dmochowski, who lived long before The Schism in Kaytism, which was the reason of the great war engulfing whole Wyfeur. Kazimierz was a legend - a brave knight known in whole Wyfeur, who stopped Akiin Horde march on west. He was an excellent commander, fierce fighter and curious traveller. He loved gothic architecture, especially the Guérisseur Dame Cathedral in Angery. He loved it so much that he decided to recreate the style in his castle. However, as a marshall, he also knew how to make the castle functional as a defensive structure. The result was this marvel of medieval architectural thought. However, as Joachim observed, the castle was obsolete. It was hard to capture in the medieval times, sure, but now, with cannons, it would fall very soon, especially if culverins were brought. They arrived to the gate. After some shouting between guards and king, bascule brigde was brought down and the gates opened. On the Middle Castle they left their horses and most of Hahnreitern and lesser nobles went to quarters. In the meanwhile Hahnreitern officers and King with her court went to the Higher Castle. They went through another bridge, with gates on both of its' sides. They went on a courtyard, which was surrounded with cloisters. - No proszę, a jakiż to tu mam gości? Wasza Boska Mość osobiście? - Asked a richly-worn man, who was standing in the middle of the couryard, resting on a barred well. He stepped forward and kissed the king on her hand. Then he gripped hand of chamberlain and looked askingly on Joachim and his people. - To są nasi goście - said Archibald - Zapewne kojarzysz Kogucich Rajtarów? - You are The Rooster Banner themselves?! - shouted lord of the castle and ran forward to them - You are probably Joachim von Volkenrose? - he asked Joachim, who just nodded. The noble took Joachim's hand and started shaking it vigourously, surely more than necessary - It is a great honor to host such a great person in my own castle! And who are your men? - Ah, they are Lieutenant Heidrun Assendorp and Cornet Godfried Vandergrift. And you are...? - Oh, please forgive my manners! I am Henryk Dmochowski, the lord of this castle. Heidrun extended her arm to shake hands with Henryk, but instead of shaking it, he just took it and kissed it. Heidrun's face turned red from anger and she was about to slap the noble when Joachim stopped her. Henryk grabbed Godfried's hand and shaked it. - You look to me like a very literate person, am I right? - Well, yes. - Then you will probably be happy that we have quite large library, containg some of the oldest books in the world. Vandergirft just nodded. - Well, my son should be back from hunting really soon. Please consider yourself guests, I'll show you your quarters - said Dmochowski and they all went inside.
