The high commander nearly spat his drink all over alpha huntress Skyler. Knowing that course of action would bring about a swift death, he forced himself to swallow as quickly as possible, the result of which was for him to drip water out on his pants as he nearly choked to death. Real cool, Rellek. Real cool. "They what?!" He spat, finally wresting himself from death's watery grip. "How did they get past the blockade?" "Volkenrose attacked the outpost when the power was down." Theresa replied. "Poor bastards were sitting ducks." She continued "That leaves them within strike distance-" "Of the capitol." Rellek finished her sentence. "Of us." Skyler merely nodded. "As the highest ranking military officer on site, Empress help us, that makes you in charge." she explained. Rellek buried his face in his hands. They weren't prepared for this contingency. He'd just have to make do with what they had. "Very well. We'll have to intercept them. Meet me in the war room." He told her. As she left the room, he stood from his desk transitioned to the living quarters area attached to his office. He walked up to his wardrobe, flung open the doors and pulled out the uniform bearing the Tsun national colors, green, black and gold.
The High Commander stood in the war room with Huntresses Skyler, Rose, Faye, and Swift. One of his hands rested on the hilt of the sword on his belt and the other on the holo war table. All Icarian officers were equipped with swords, and encouraged to learn how to use them. "How much time do we have?" he asked the room. "A half a day, maybe less." Replied Faye, nervously running a hand through her long brown hair. "We need to get word to the general as quickly as possible." "No use." Chimed Swift, a relatively short and dark haired huntress. "We'll be overrun long before he can get here." "Is there anyone closer?" he asked. "Legion Commander 'Soul Corrupter' is the closest to us, but even he won't be able to get here in time." Answered Bellatrix Rose, the tall, aloof looking woman at the back of the room. "His men are spread out and it could take him some time to regroup, so there's no telling when he'll be able to get here." Not good. "Notify them both anyway." Rellek ordered. "What about us? What am I working with?" "Not much." Skyler replied. "Mostly irregulars. Militia and volunteers, no one with any real training. The T-STF are our only trained soldiers." The Commander exhaled all of the air from his body. This was going to be a bloodbath. "Alright, here is the plan." Rellek pointed to the map on the table. "I see five likely paths for the enemy to advance through. I want each of you and myself to take an equal portion of forces and fortify each pass. We won't be able to hold them off for long with us that spread out, so as soon as one of us makes contact, I want the rest of you to reinforce them as quickly as possible. Hopefully we can hold out until the cavalry arrives." "And what if no one gets here in time?" asked Faye. Rellek threw a wry smile her way and said "Then our deaths will be spectacular."

Soul Corrupter was busy trying overlook some after action reports. He recently had a troop deliver some disturbing news, officer Sheilla Sins came running in and stammered some obviously out of breath.."Legion... Commander...Sir....news on ..the front." Holding up a hand to silence his subordinate he spoke. "Take it easy Lieutenant Sins, take some time to catch you breath and then deliver your report." Sins took his advice and slowly catched her breath "Sir I just got word that the enemy Cluades have broken through blockade and they are on route to the capital." Just then he got a holo transmission from the capital from Bellatrix Rose describing the situation, as he read it a wry smile spread across his lips, the Lieutenant confused at this behavior started to speak again, "Sir I don't think this is a laugh...." He cut her off again with his hand. "Lieutenant we have what 30 troops stationed here at base, and the the rest of our battalion is out in the field deploying our new bio-sensor landmines, as well as securing the perimeter? That means what a good 60 out in the field?"
Quickly recovering her composure she answers him "Yes sir, last communication two of the squads were nearly done and are finishing up now and should be on the way back within three hours. Our other two squads still have two areas to get to due to terrain troubles and are twelve hours out." Soul Corruptor's eyes studied the holo map he recently pulled up at the mention of that, if they were near that valley this would actually be of great importance to them. It would put those troops four hours away from the capital while right now with the transport here they would only be two away. Problem is sending the messages to the troops would take ten minutes to them and ten minutes back, that would be twenty minutes of black out time and he hated black out time. Then there would be an additional 10 to confirm an order but that could possibly be cut out "Get a message to those two squads furthest out asp, if they are at or near that valley give them a priority cancellation of the mission and have them reroute themselves to the capital, also tell our two squads returning here they are to hold out the base here, they have permission to take out the MK2's despite them being in the test stages if need be. We had a bulk of the armory delivered here to us for a reason, most of their voices are coded into the containers to unlock, password is "Praise Tsun Empress"" He saw the look in his Lieutenants eye, "hey don't look at me I didn't make it they delivered it that way. I'll go and get some weapons for our two squads here and lead the charge myself to the capital, you stay here and command the two squads returning. Also LT take our remaining bio-sensor mines and make a perimeter stand yourself just in case enemy troops show up. If need be fall back and take the remaining transports to the capital, loss of life will not be accepted here."
Lieutenant Sins was about to issues a protest when she was silenced again "That's an order LT, I don't give a damn about staying here and managing everything myself, we got message from the capital they need us back there and yes I know we can't afford to lose this spot, it's why i'm leaving it to you." She saluted him and left the tent, finally half an hour later he was leading 30 troops in a convoy back to the capital, they were armed with the MK1's and four grenades each, also along with him five of his elite troops were armed with a new sword. It was a plasma like sword that could be turned on and off, while it was off it was just a normal sword, but turned on a coat of energy plasma coated the surface to help cut through armor that might block traditional swords. He was only hoping right now that his troops would make it to the capital in time and that they would be enough.

“General, Sir! We just received an urgent message from Headquarters. Apparently a strike force led by the notorious mercenary and war criminal Volkenrose somehow made it through our blockade and is now approaching HQ.”
“Great… another problem. It’s not like we’re standing in a giant pile of shit already. Right?” General Blackhead cleared his throat. “Okay, relay following message back to HQ”
I’m afraid to tell you that Volkenrose might merely be a minor nuisance in view of the real threat you’re about to face shortly. I’ve been tasked to capture the traitor Commander Jonathan Harper of the Sapphire Phoenix Legion. I won’t go into the specifics of his betrayal in this message, because I deem this to be irrelevant at this point and time where we have more pressing matters to discuss. The first army is currently under my direct command and we’ve been chasing that slippery son of a bitch and his units across The whole damn canyon for almost a week. Long story short: He got lucky and managed to outmaneuver my forces due to a different, with this situation unconnected attack, which was carried out by Claude’s forces against us. We were fortunate enough to stumble into that… Harper is now regrouping and preparing a decisive strike against HQ. Scout reports suggest a troop strength of roughly 550 Soldiers. But that’s not everything. The heretics will rendezvous with a different force of about 1200 Solan troops along the way.
I have more vital information for you. Harper is in possession of new experimental explosives. They will attempt to completely blow HQ from Earth’s surface. HQ’s outer walls are reinforced and exceptionally robust, so we expect them to storm the building and detonate the place from the inside. Narcissistic and arrogant as Commander Harper is, he’s probably carrying the explosives and codes to detonate the charges himself. That’s certainly something he wouldn’t entrust anyone else with. He is an experienced war veteran, tactician, and a horrific Soldier on top of that. I don’t want anyone lesser than Skyler herself on his ass! This bastard is dangerous and he must be stopped at all costs! And finally the really bad news:
While Claude’s forces in the canyons pose no serious threat to our formidable first army, they will still be able to bind us here entirely. We can’t make it back. HQ, you’re on your own. We are all counting on you.
Sincerely, Supreme General Blackhead

Rellek turned off his holo. The news from the general was not quite what he'd hoped. He scanned across the crowd of "soldiers" to see only men and women. They were so few, and he could see the fear in their eyes, in their hearts. He saw two soldiers in the crowd holding hands. He nearly lost himself. "I will not mince words with you," He shouted to the assembled mass. "My hopes for survival are low. I will not force any of you to fight and die here today that do not wish to, but there is more at stake here than our empire and our supremacy! Our enemy is deep within OUR lands! The stakes are our homes! Our families! I beg of you to remember what you fight for! Give it purpose, and lay down your lives, not for me, but for those you love!" He saw their fear be replaced by a wave of resigned stoicism. "Let it never be said that we backed down from a fight!" Theresa added. "Let it never be said that we faltered in our duty, and let fear rule our lives!" She could be damned inspirational when she wanted to be. "Our Empress is watching!" The high commander said to his men, "Make sure she is not ashamed, for we are her shield!"

It was dark when mercenaries arrived to inn. Even from outside, you could hear there was some kind of party over there. - Well fuck me if this isn't a perfect place to rest - said Lieutenant Assendorp. Joachim just smiled. - Comrades! We're setting a camp near this inn! - he shouted to a column behind him. A round of cheers answered him. People quickly dismounted, took their tents and placed them, then they took care of food, horses and water. In the meanwhile, Joachim entered the inn. In inside, there was a bunch of more or less drunken Icarian nobles and travelling merchants. Especially large group was concentrated around really drunk noblewoman in yellow coat. She took her attention to the fact that he entered the inn and seemed quite interested in him, but Rittmeister didn't see that. He walked up to the bar and sit on a stool. - What can I serve to you? - innkeeper asked in fluent Avanian. Guessing from an accent, he was a native Avanii. - One beer, please, and maybe some supplies for my men. But let's take care of the latter later. - Joachim put few coins on desk. Innkepeer just nodded and few seconds later he handed him a mug of beer. - By the way, can I know where we are and how are we supposed to travel to get to Vospad? Innkeeper mumbled something and exited main hall. Few moments later he was back with a map of Icarin. - Vospad is right there, on the north by the sea. - Avanii pointed to said location. - We are here, not so far from Tarchogorod - he pointed first to mentioned city, and then to their current location. - You will get there easily, just follow the main road and look at signs on crossroads. Innkeeper went back to serving the other clients, leaving Joachim alone with the map. Von Volkenrose looked at it, planning the most efficient way to Vospad, so that they arrive there before the war ends, but also that they don't starve in the midst of their journey. Suddenly, the woman in yellow coat sat next to him. - Heyyyyyy there Joachim felt that nothing good will come out of this talk. Drunkards were quite annoying and pathetic, but just try to show them what you think of them and you'll have a fight. - Hi. - Can I know your name? - Isaac Eckstein - Joachim bursted out without thinking. The woman looked confused. - Whaaaaaat? You are Catian? But you don't have cat ears. Or do you hide them under your hat? - She tried to get his hat off, but Joachim just stopped her by grabbing her hand and taking his hat off himself. - Well, you see, we, Catians, inherit cat ears after mother, while my mother was "normal", as you'd call it, with my father being Catian, hence my name. - The bit about ears was actually true. Joachim learnt that from one Catian who had similiar case. Or maybe he lied to him? Whatever. It seemed to work fine for Icarian woman. - Ah, I see. Can I know where you are going? Joachim looked at the map and just took first random city he saw. - Icarogorod. - Captial? Haha! What a coincidence! Actually, I'm travelling there too! Then she leaned on him. He pushed her back, but she leaned in him again, this time even hugging him firmly. He tried to gently push her, but seeing that this isn't working, he just pushed her so hard that she landed on a floor - Get the fuck off me you stupid drunken piece of shit wench for fuck sake - Mercenary life teaches many skills, amogn them was ability to throw such clusters without any thought in 1 second. Woman's face was getting redder with every word, changing into purple. The whole hall went silent. Innkeeper just snatched the map back and ran to his room. Joachim noticed that Heidrun was watching whole scene through inn's window, sending signals for her men to get ready to intervene, but also giggling slightly. - YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS! - Suddenly, she roared and everyone in the bar cowered. - ARCHIBAAALD! - W czym mogę służyć? - A richly dressed man walked to her, and they started speaking Icarian. - CHCĘ SIĘ BIĆ! - Wasza Królewska Mość, ale... - ZAMKNIJ MORDĘ I PRZEKAŻ TEMU PLUDRAKOWI ŻE GO WYZYWAM NA POJEDYNEK The man just gulped and turned to Joachim. - She wants to duel. - Fine for me. - CO POWIEDZIAŁ? - Zgadza się. They went outside. Hahnreiters were already waiting there, with hands on their weapons. - Make some place, I'm having a duel here. - He looked Heidrun into eyes - Just try to intervene if she will be close to kill me. They stood against each other. - Any rules, Archie? - Rittmeister asked - Yuo fight until one surrenders or loses conciousness or life. Joachim was composed and attentive, while his opponent was snorting air and furious. They took their weapons. Von Volkenrose took his rapier out and stood in stance graciously, while Icarian just pulled her sabre out of sheath and throw the sheath away, standing like a murderer. Archibald looked at both of them and then he said: - Ales! Icarian charged with a roar, on which Joachim just reacted with simple old trick, which was just pointing his sword in front of him. However, Icarian was having none of that, she just moved the balde out of her way with sabre and started attacking Volkenrose directly. He doged the first strike and blocked the other ones, but hardly. She was damn fast! She was probably an exellent fighter and would kill him easily, if she was nto that drunk. Well, time to use it against her. Joachim started manouvering around her, but she was still keeping up with him, although hardly. He moved some distance from her. She charged again, but this time Joachim just slipped through next to her and rammed his elbow in her back. She flew forward, almost falling on ground, but she leaned on her sabre. Joachim went to offensive. He thrusted and slashed, but every his attack was blocked or parried. uddenly, she managed to disarm him. A triumphant spark shined in her eyes. Joachim however, instead of running for his weapon, just leaped on her. He grabbed her hand with sabre by the wrist and with the other hand he landed a fist on her face. She fell on the mud and shit, with Joachim on her, who landed few more hits just to be sure she is unconcious. Everyone went silent. - Well, that was quite unorthodox - commented Archibald, breaking the silence. Joachim started to immediatly take care of Icarian moneybag. - it is not everytime I see a random cavalrist defeat a king in a duel. Joachim freezed with moneybag in his hand. - You mean... Archibald just nodded. - Yes. Congratulations, you just won with King Icari VII of Isidolde bloodline. Joachim looked on Queen... or King... or whatever. He decided that it would be better to leave this particular moneybag with its' owner.

Two hours ago; Showdown.
“Commander Harper, I’m Captain Tillerson, leader of the Solan Xenturios regiment.” A bulky man stepped forward and shook Harpers hand.
“My pleasure.” The traitor replied, nodding his head.
“I’m surprised you made it here. We didn’t expect that to be honest. We already planned to initiate the attack without the support of your forces. How did you manage to shake off Blackhead and the first army?” Tillerson asked.
The veteran smirked. “I know the canyons like no one else. I made calculated and correct decisions. That’s all.”
Tillerson looked highly impressed. “You are in charge of this operation Commander, I will gladly put my men under your command. Do you have some additional intel on the enemy?”
Harper shrugged. “This is going to be easy. All they have are poorly trained irregulars, maybe some office workers.” A few Solan soldiers began to chuckled over that. When they went silent again, Commander Harper continued. “Of course they also have a small force of security employees, which shouldn’t be a big obstacle to overcome. However I have to warn you about the T-STF Alpha Squad that will be defending the facility. They are incredibly deadly and should not be underestimated.”
“But that’s just a single Squad?” A Solan lieutenant with the name tag Edwards frowned.
“Correct. A Squad of five.” Commander Harper confirmed. “And now prepare to commence the attack, gentleman.”
Back at HQ the atmosphere was unbearably apprehensive. In some last minute preparations tables were overturned and misused as additional means of cover. Skyler and Rose were positioned in the front lobby where they expected the main brunt of the attack to hit. Rellek and Swift were on the roof of HQ. There was a mountain formation to HQ’s north. Being informed of Harpers qualities as a tactician they predicted that he’d try to establish top control over the facility by reaching the rooftop with climbing hooks, and the mountains would serve as a leverage point in this scenario. Faye was positioned somewhere in the building and had been given the order to take the lead of a ‘flex unit’, which was supposed to stabilize the heart of the facility and reinforce whichever front needed it most during the battle. Unfortunately they were all thin spread. Very, thin spread.
Skyler was more tensed than ever. She took a quick look at the clock that was hanging in the entrance lobby. 11 PM, she read. “I don’t like this, Bellatix. Barely any moonlight tonight, and then fucking fog on top of this. We’ll never see them coming.”
Rose didn’t answer. She appeared to be distant and focused, but in reality trembled inside. Waiting for what seemed like an inevitable death, terrified her. She started to shiver.
Commander Skyler noticed that but remained silent. She directed her assault weapon at the lobby’s entrance again and descended into her own thoughts. “No, I’m not afraid. I’m not afraid. I’m the number one! I can do this! Come on, bring it on!”
One moment of dead silence later.
“Contact!” A security guard screamed while he raised his weapon and started to fire into the dark night. A wild barrage of hundreds of bullets was the responds from the attackers. Most guards near the windows instantly fell to this thunderous bullet storm.
“God damn it! Back off the fucking windows” Skyler shouted in frustration. “Let them move in. There’s more cover in here and we can attack from different angles. There is no use in blindly firing around and exposing yourself simultaneously”
Suddenly the entrance was blasted open in a massive explosion. Solan and heretic Soldiers swarmed into the lobby. Windows were smashed to serve as additional ways in as more and more Soldiers stormed the place. Skyler’s ears roared from the explosion and she was somewhat confused by the sheer chaos in front of her. Soldiers tripped over wires, ducked for cover, cursed, fired and tried to formate and organize. She took aim and began to fire. Many Solans and heretics fell initially, but once they were able to coordinate and organize themselves, the tides quickly turned. This was just a numbers game. A game they didn’t stand a chance of winning. Solan and heretic forces fought their way through the lobby and soon dominated HQ’s first floor.
Harper and Tillerson entered the building. “I will set the charges somewhere near the nuclear reactor, one level below.” Harper declared. “You go ahead and secure the upper levels.”
“What? Nuclear reactor?” The Solan Captain gasped.
“Yes. This facility requires a large amount of energy to stay operational. They use their own reactor to keep the station powered. And now go! Let’s not waste time.”
Then a round of fire erupted as bullets rained in through windows from the west, killing multiple Solan soldiers in the process.
“What the hell is going on?” Harper barked.
“Sir, we have an Icarian unit coming in from the west. They are still almost a mile away from our position. How in the world are they hitting any shots?” One heretic Soldier asked.
“Shit. They probably have MK Rifles. New orders: I want units 7-18 to establish a defensive perimeter outside. Don’t let anyone come close to this building and kill every last of them. All units, move out!”
“Too many of them!” The blonde woman said, trying to conceal a hint of desperation in her voice. “Whatever you do Bellatrix, don’t peak from your cover. There are at least 20 assholes across the room lurking and lining up their shoot for when they see you pop up.”
Rose started to panic. “We have to fall back! We need to get out of here immediately, Theresa!”
Commander Skyler exhaled slowly. “Okay, the lobby is lost. Harper took the elevator, we can’t let him plant these explosives. I bet he’s going for the reactor, would make much sense to plant them there. I’m going to distract those fuckers and we’re making a run for the staircase. Understood?”
Rose nodded determined. “Understood”
Skyler held a flash bang in her right hand and estimated the angle and force she had to put in this throw. “Okay, I’ve got this. On my mark. 3…2…1… GO!” In the meantime the battle on the roof raged on. Overwhelming numbers pushed the Icarians back. Swift and Rellek were forced to retreat inside and soon had to give up floor 24 likewise. They bitterly fought off Solan pursuers as they made their way down to level 23.
They were shocked to see that floor 23 had already become a battleground. “What?” Rellek stammered. “They came from all the way below?”
“Get down Sir! Grenade!” Swift yelled. She pulled Rellek down behind cover, and both barely avoided being blown into pieces. After the explosion Rellek slowly raised his head again. In front of them were three Solan Soldiers. One of them appeared to be a high ranked officer, he could tell that much by just looking at the special uniform that guy wore. All three of them focused their weapons towards his and Swift’s position, as they moved forward calmly.
“That was a great grenade Captain Tillerson. We probably got them” One of the soldiers stated.
“I’m not sure. Prepare to fire immediately if you see something.” The Captain doubted.
Swift pulled out a new magazine and reloaded her submachine gun. Like a predator she sat there waiting for an opening. Tillerson came closer, and closer, time was running out for Rellek and Swift, jumping out of cover would have been a death sentence.
Then they heard a loud shot and the next thing they saw was a flying Tillerson. He was swooped off his feet and landed well over two meters away from his original position, where he remained motionless. His Soldiers turned around, but were gunned down before they could react.
“That takes care of things” Swift sighed in relief.
“Hey, over here!” Beni waved with a shotgun. He and other surviving security guards had barricaded inside the coffee shop from where they did their utmost best to give hell to any heretic or Solans who dared to set step on floor 23.
Rellek followed Swift into the Coffee. “What’s your status?” He asked, wasting no time.
“It’s really rough, but we’re holding ourselves, champ.” Beni claimed while giving the best smile he could considering their situation.
“Shit, I have to do something!” Rellek cursed. “If they made it all the way up here, it can’t be long until Harper sets his explosives. I’m going to work my way down and try to stop him.”
Beni crossed his arms. “I don’t think that this is a good idea. HQ is swarmed with enemies waiting to slit your throat. Do you even know where he would set his charges?”
“No, I’m not sure. I’ll try to get in contact with other survivors. Hopefully someone has a better grasp on what’s going on. Theresa, Amelie, Bellatrix they have to be alive! We can still prevent the worst of it. Clarice, I want you to stay here and hold the Coffee. Many more will come from the roof now, try your best to hold them off for me and keep Beni safe.”
“I don’t like this, but it’s your call to make. Try to stay undetected, it would be stupid to get involved in a gunfight.” She saluted. “I hope we all make it out alive. It's been an honor.” Beni leaped forward and gave Rellek a hug. “I hope that’s not the last time we see each other my friend.”
Skyler and Rose fought side by side through HQ’s basement corridors. T-STF’s number one and two easily proved to be too much, for the occasional heretic Squad they ran across to handle.
Commander Skyler peaked around a corner. “The reactor room is right over there, next to it is a large storage room and it looks like the two Soldiers over there are guarding that said room.”
Rose’s mouth curved into a weak smile. “Maybe it’s not too late yet. Theresa, I take the one on the left, you take the right one. Thanks to our suppressed weaponry, Harper will not even hear us coming.”
After two precise, simultaneously fired headshots both guards dropped on the ground. Skyler sneaked towards the door. “I’m going to open it, be prepared to take the shot.” Both women got in position. Rose kneeled down and aimed through her sights. With a slight nod of her head she indicated that she was ready to fire. In that instance Skyler threw herself against the door and broke in. To T-STF’s disappointment Harper was facing the door and stood at an odd angle in a corner across the room. He abruptly jumped to cover behind a crate and Rose missed her shot.
“Damn it!” Skyler almost spat as she and Rose followed suit in taking cover behind different objects. She quickly tried to assess their situation. It looked like the explosives were already in place and ready to be set off. In the middle of the room she recognized a device with a timer on it. It was set on 15 minutes, but remained static, which had to mean that Harper wasn’t able to activate and initiate the countdown! So, they did make it in time!
The confident Alpha Huntress raised her voice. “It’s over Harper! Surrender now, and you might make it out here alive.”
“You think you’ve won?” He mocked them. “You think, I let a couple of bitches fuck me over, huh?” Harper threw a smoke grenade from his safe position behind the crate. The room swiftly began to darken as smoke poured out and worsened their view with every passing second.
“What is he trying to pull here?” Rose wondered.
Skyler was clueless for a second, then realization overcame her causing her eyes to widen in shook. “You hear that sound? That sucker is crawling on the ground like the pathetic worm that he is.”
“What in the hell?” The number two shrieked. “I can’t see anything. What is he doing?”
“Suppressing fire! We need to put suppressing fire towards the device. He’s trying to crawl up to it and initiate the countdown.” The blonde responded.
Bullets flew over Harper’s head, some only missing him by inches, which forced him to crawl back behind his cover. “I will kill you! I will kill both of you bitches!” He drew his handgun as bullets continued to fly in his direction hitting the wall in front of him. He closely observed the angle in which the bullets hit the wall, then he rolled out from cover and blindly shot through the smoke.
“Ah! I’m hit!” Rose screeched in pain. She took a look at her right arm. “Only a graze, but it still hurts quiet a bit though.”
The smoke started to fade and the T-STF duo began to get impatient in their current stalemate situation. Harper ran out of ammunition for his handgun, which was a factor Skyler and Rose were unaware of. He couldn’t reach his equipment in the middle of the room, and now he really began to feel the pressure. With nervous and sweaty hands he held on to his combat knife, praying for a miracle to happen.
“Theresa, cover me!” Rose threw a flash bang towards Harpers cover. The grenade bounced off the wall and landed directly behind the crate. A perfect throw. Harper was surprised and reacted late, he barely managed to cover his eyes and was unable to protect his ears from the loud dull explosion, leaving him deaf for a moment.
“That’s our chance!” Rose leaped over her cover and sprinted in front of Harper’s crate. Skyler held her position and covered Rose. The tall woman aimed down the crate. For a split second both her and Harper were frozen in shock. Rose, because she didn’t expect him to be able to see. Harper, because he wasn’t able to hear her approach. She pulled the trigger, but Harper was faster. He grabbed the barrel of her gun and avoided a volley of bullets that were supposed to end him. Then he jumped up and rammed his knife into her stomach. Skyler tried her best to find an opportunity to kill the heretic with a precise shot, but the latter was able to effectively hide behind Rose and use her as a human shield. In order to escape Skyler’s sights entirely, he threw the woman on top of himself and they both disappeared out of her vision behind the crate. Rose dropped her weapon in the process. She was struggling and screaming as Harper sliced her stomach open. Blood spurted from her wound.
Filled with adrenalin Skyler stormed towards the crate. “You son of a bitch!”
He pulled the knife out of her stomach and went for the killing blow. Using all of his strength he rammed the knife into her throat. The screaming stopped.
Silence. Harper looked up to his left into crystal-blue, cold eyes. Theresa shook with fury. Pointing her gun at his head, she whispered. “You… You deserve more than death. You betrayed us all. How many of your own comrades did you betray and kill to get here. You… You have murdered Bellatrix in an absolutely disgusting and unforgivable manner… Why? Why are you doing this?”
In this moment an explosion occurred. The second entrance door of the storage room was blasted open and a single Soldier entered the scene. Pumped with adrenalin and fury Skyler whirled around at lightning speed. She and the unknown Soldier locked eyes. Both started to raise their weapons at each other with inhuman speed. One shot was heard.
And Theresa went down.
Harper was dumbfounded first and then started to laugh ecstatically. He looked into death’s eyes moments ago and now lives on to fight another day. “Unbelievable job, son! Incredible. I have never seen anything like this. Who the hell are you, son?”
The Soldier walked further into the room and stepped over Theresa, who was lying on the ground, pressing her hand over the bullet wound. Harper read his name tag. Edwards. “Oh, it’s you.” The veteran smirked. “We have met before.”
“Correct.” Edwards nodded. “Are the explosives ready? Are we good to go? It’s time to get out of here.”
Commander Harper raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about?” He walked up to the device and activated it. The countdown started.
“Many reason. Volkenrose engaged our forces. A couple of his mercenaries even made it into this facility. Then there is the Icarian Squad outside which has broken through our defensive perimeter and seized control in front of this building. It’s not going to be easy to get out of here, they are opening fire on anyone who attempts to leave this building. And finally it seems like that there is an additional Icarian infiltration unit in here. This unit specifically targets commanding officers, causing our command chain to fall apart. While it appears like we are in complete control within the building, our Soldiers are in disarray in reality. But that’s not much of an issue now that we have set the explosives and accomplished our mission. Retreat is our new objective now.” He explained.
“I see.” Harper grumbled. “I’m just going to take care of some unfinished business. Then we’ll leave.” He reloaded his Handgun and stepped above Theresa. Targeting her chest he fired 4,5,6 times. The first three shots caused her to scream out in pain with each impact, after that her screams changed into silent moaning.
“Now, I'm done.” Harper and Edwards went outside.
Theresa writhed in pain. It was almost unbearable. She looked up, intending to catch a final glimpse at the soldier who brought her down. Edwards. But they were already gone. ‘How? How could he beat me? What kind of monster is that guy? I can’t die like this. Have to make it out. Don’t have much time.’ She rolled around and slowly crawled her way out of the room, leaving a massive blood trail behind. Edwards and Harper ran through the basement’s corridors. Their goal was to reach the staircase, which lead up to the lobby again. They decided against using the elevator in order to attract less attention. Edwards followed Harpers lead, and as the latter peaked out from the final corner leading to the staircase, a shot was fired. The Commander was hit and fell down. Edwards halted in an instant and recognized right away that Harper was dead. The marksman had to be incredibly good to hit the head of a moving target, He judged. Especially considering that the target leaped from a corner like this. Alpha Huntress Amelie Faye aimed down the corridor. She knew that there still had to be one enemy. She certainly heard two pairs of steps, which meant that there had to be one more guy behind the corner. The female soldier steadily walked forward, ready to open fire at any second. Edwards listened to her steps and prepared to strike. Once Faye was close enough, Edwards jumped out of the corner. He was too fast for her to react. Smashing the grip of his assault rifle in her face she stumbled backwards. She hit the ground hard, nonetheless she managed to target her weapon at him while she laid on her back. When she was about to pull the trigger, another shot echoed through the corridor.
Amelie’s head sank down.
And Edwards stepped over her corpse.
Soul corruptor and his unit covered HQ’s entrance while Solan and heretic forces started their tactical retreat. They made sure to take out as many of them as possible. Most enemies were either dead or already escaped at this point and it had been silent for a while now. Until one Icarian was shot and killed from seemingly nowhere.
“Sniper! Enemy sniper, take cover!” Soul Corruptor commanded.
“Where is the shooter?” One soldier asked, peaking from his cover. Less than a second later he was also shot.
“There he is! He’s trying to escape!” A third shot roared, and the third Icarian fell.
The remaining survivors of Soul Corruptor’s Squad looked at each other in complete horror. “Nobody gets out of cover! That’s an order. I….”
He couldn’t finish his sentence, because of a massive explosion coming from HQ which interrupted him.
“So they did succeed after all?”
“This explosion was far smaller in scale than we thought. HQ still stands. I think they didn’t do nearly as much damage as they’d have hoped for.” Soul Corruptor analysed.
“True.”
Theresa crawled all the way back up to the lobby, where she leaned her back on a wall. She somehow survived this explosion. Granted, it was far less devastating than anyone expected, but still. She heard steps and barely recognized Rellek hovering above her. She was close to passing out.
"I told you I'd make you a heroine, so don't die on me now!" Rellek placed Theresa on the floor of a partially bombed out building. Her wounds were severe.
"Ha!" Theresa coughed "It will take a lot more than that to put me down!" He fumbled a first aid kit out of a medical bag and began to treat her wounds. He knew what he was doing, he'd trained for this. He just had to concentrate. Just when he had finished bandaging her wounds, he heard footsteps entering the room. He whirled around and put two shots from his pistol into the chest of the mercenary who tried to sneak up on him. The man slumped over in the doorway. Surely more would come now, and those were his last two shots. The rest of his men were either dead, dying, or tied up in the fighting. So much life lost. He stood up and drew his sword. This was up to him now. Her life was in his hands. He limped to the doorway, nearly falling over from his own wounds.
"What are you doing?" Skyler asked incredulously. Sure enough he could hear hastened footsteps approaching up the stairs. This is where he would make his stand. "I'm making myself a buffer between them and you." he said as he raised his blade "It's my job."
Rellek faced a woman. Someone he hadn’t seen before, and yet she was dressed in this unique T-STF attire. “No, it can’t be you?”
“Oh, yes it can be me, duh. Laura Valentine, I’m happy to finally meet you in person.” She winked.
“I thought you were off-duty” Rellek used this opportunity to sit down and catch his breath again. This had probably been the toughest day of his life.
“No, I returned as soon as I heard the news. Who else do think did take out all these enemy officers? They speculated whether there was an infiltration team at work here, but it was just good old me.”
“Interesting. That definitely explains some stuff.”
“Anyways, HQ is more or less secured now.” Her gaze shifted to Theresa. “Oh, my good! What happened to her! How much blood did she lose? she’s all pale! We have to get proper treatment for her. NOW! ”

The Aftermath
"I just found her like this on my way to the reactor." Rellek said as he gently picked up Theresa, careful not to agitate any of her wounds, even as agonizing pain shot through his injured leg for carrying the extra weight. "Can you clear a path to the medical ward?" he asked, fighting his instinctual urge to freak out. "Of course I can! Come on!" Laura exclaimed, extremely worried about her friend. The two of them raced towards the medical ward, encountering little resistance as the enemy was in full retreat.
Huntress Valentine banged frantically on the barricaded door to the medical ward "Open up! We have wounded!" No sooner had the personnel within removed the barricade than the High Commander burst into the room with Skyler in his arms. Within moments he was surrounded by nurses who quickly guided him to an operating table upon which he set the barely living alpha huntress and let the medics do their jobs. After what felt like hours, the head nurse informed Rellek and Valentine that Skyler would live. Their relief was palpable.
Once he was sure Theresa was in good hands, Rellek stood to leave the medical ward. "Where are you going?" Valentine asked. "To investigate the reactor." He replied simply. The head nurse clearly had a problem with this idea, and intervened "Oh no you don't. You're wounded. You're staying here." "I'll be back later" he argued. "I'll go with him." Laura compromised, "I'll take care of him." At this point more injured were flowing in, and the nurse really didn't have time to argue and so just waved them off.
The duo marched their way down hallway after hallway. Rellek's limping became more and more severe as they went. Laura wondered what was going on with him that he was acting like this. She pulled his arm around herself and used her body to prop him up and help him walk. "Thank you." he croaked dryly. "Glad to help, commander." she replied, rolling her eyes at his apparent stupidity "You're going to hurt yourself limping around like..." She gasped. They turned a corner to see a body in a black bodysuit lying in a pool of blood. "Amelie..." Laura's eyes began to tear up. Rellek knelt by her body. He closed her eyes with two fingers, and placed her gun on her chest, and her hands on her gun. His respect was interrupted by a gurgling sound nearby. He turned to discover the not quite dead Legion Commander Harper, blood gurgling from his throat. The monster was trying to laugh! Rellek stood over him. Anger swelled within his veins like poison. "Your gun, Ms. Valentine." he said firmly, holding a hand out to her. She complied wordlessly. He took aim with the Mk 2 rifle right between the heretic's eyes. No. He had to suffer. He turned the gun on each of his kneecaps and fired two shots. "Let's go." he said to his companion, as they left Harper behind, writhing in pain and bleeding to death.
They finally reached the reactor room after walking silently for some time. Neither one of them were taking Faye's death well, but they surveyed the damage regardless. There was barely a dent. The place was built to house a nuclear reactor. It was built strong. Surely the enemy must have known this. The reactor must have been some kind of diversion. What were they really after? Before he could finish this train of thought, they saw the body of Bellatrix Rose. Laura's eyes could not leave her friend's body. Some bastard had cut her open. She'd been mutilated. She couldn't take it anymore. She fell to her hands and knees and threw up, the anguish overwhelming her. Rellek stood, witnessing this scene of suffering, and his rage boiled over with the intensity of a thousand suns. He slammed a metallic fist into the side of the reactor armor. He needed to vent somehow, but couldn't. This was the heretic's purpose. To destroy. All of this senseless death and he didn't even know why! These traitorous heretics were evil, and he would not suffer a single one of them to live. He swore by everything he thought holy that he would never let this happen again. He was still in charge of an elite task force of huntresses, and the hunt would consume all of those responsible.

Resignation?
Two days Later; medical ward
Skyler viewed over casualty reports. Valentine sat next to her bed with a worried and sad expression on her face.
#1 Theresa Skyler: Injured #2 Bellatrix Rose: K.I.A #3 Amelie Faye: K.I.A #4 Clarice Swift: Injured #5 Laura Valentine: Active
“Amelie is dead too?” She asked in a defeated tone.
Laura sniffed at the mention of her fallen friend’s name. She was known to be the most passionate and emotional member of T-STF. “Harper was still alive when we discovered her. We think he did it.”
“It wasn’t Harper then. I’m sure that she was killed by Edwa…”
“STOP IT!” Laura was in tears and hammered her fist against the nightstand, causing some nurses around them to turn their heads. “You are obsessed Theresa! You’ve only been talking about this guy since I came here!”
The injured huntress didn’t respond. She simply stared at the ceiling. Then finally she began to speak. “I had much time to think, I want you to bring these papers to Rellek.” Skyler handed a document over.
“What’s this?” the new number three was puzzled.
Skyler hesitated, her eyes were empty. “I’m stepping down.”
“No, Theresa!” Laura threw the papers back at her friend. “This is so unlike yourself. You ordered me to take a break recently, but it seems like you need it more than I. Relax for a second. I’m here for you!”
Theresa’s eyes filled with tears. “You just don’t get it Laura!” Huntress Valentine was in utter shock, she has never witnessed her Commander like this.
“I can’t beat him! I’m completely outclassed!”

Hahnreitern were sitting in their camp, centered on their commander. Closest to Rittmeister were his officers, most notably Lieutenant Heidrun Assendorp and Cornet Godfried Vandergrift. - So what happens next? - asked Godfried. - Well, it's obvious, I just comitted a capital offense by humiliating the ruling monarch, so I'm going on a scaffold tomorrow. I have to say that I really liked to travel with you together. You were a bunch of truly amazing people, and I hope we will meet once again in heavens, to travel together for eternity. Assendorp, when I will... go away, let's say, you will take command over our company. Please take care of the people and most importantly, take care of Godfried. - Everyone was looking at him in shock. Someone was sobbing in the back. Assendorp herself looked like she was about to cry. Joachim looked at them all and then laughed. - YOW! - he slapped his lap - YOU JUST GOT PRANKED! Reaction was priceless - YOU MOTHERFUCKER! - Why do I even care anymore? - I WILL KILL YOU I SWEAR! - shouted Heidrun in his face. Various death threats were flying in the air, but Joachim just greeted them all with small grin. Finally everyone calmed down. - I appreciate the silence, comrades - said von Volkenrose - But now I will be serious, even if this whole situation is not serious at all.
- Ludzie! Zaprowadźcie króla do jej pokoju! - Shouted Archibald and King (or rather Queen) was taken by rather large noble inside an inn. He looked after Icari and then turned to Joachim - Why don't we talk inside, with beer? Joachim just nodded and they both entred the inn and sit in front of each other. - Karczmarzu! Piwa! - shouted Archibald again. he turned to Joachim - Forgive my manners, I am Archibald Dobrzyński, Court Chamberlain of Her Royal Majesty. - Archibald moved his hand forward. - Joachim von Volkenrose, Rittmeister of Hahnreitern - Joachim took Archibald's hand and shaked it vigorously. Guessing from a grip, chamberlain was rather confident and practical person. Innkeeper came with beer. Archibald gave him 2 golden coins. Innkeeper's eyes went wide and it seemed he wanted to oppose, but Archibald closed innkeeper's hand. - Na koszt państwa. - he said. Innkeeper looked really happy and even bowed graciously before going away. - Well - Dobrzyński grabbed a mug of beer - for the health of the winner! - Archibald raised his mug. - For the face of dear Queen Icari, so it would heal very soon! - said Joachim, raising his mug. Chamberlain laughed, covering his mouth with hand. - I can't help but wonder how she'll react to it later. - Hm? - Well, you see, our King is quite unpredictable. She has two faces - one is unsufferable, always angry cunt, the other one is kind, generous lady. Usually she shows the latter to her friends and former to her enemies, but as I've said before, she's unpredictable. - Why do you call her King? After all, we can see she is a woman. Or are they? Archibald snorted with laughter. - Don't worry, she is a woman for sure. Well, Icari rules the country, and the country is called "Kingdom" and not "Queendom", so therefore she has a title of King. Joachim nodded, not quite exactly understanding it, but grasping the concept. - Where are you going currently? - asked Archibald. Joachim wondered if he should lie to him or be honest. He chose the latter. - To Vospad. - Oh? You know it's taken by Asagians under command of lord of Lennon, right? - I am perfectly aware of that. Actually, that's why I'm going there. I thought your Crown Marshall would use some help. - But what about the Claudists? - asked Archibald. Joachim gritted his teeth. Shit, let's not blow the cover now. - Claudists are losing the war. Sooner or later, we would find ourselves surrounded by Icarians, and we would be killed to the last men. It's better to fight on the winning side. - Ah, I see. - Archibald seemed to be content with this explanation. - And you? Why is the king so far away from the capital? - Ah, typical stuff, just one of the nobles organised a great hunting and his family are very influential people in the country, so it was better to show our faces there. Now after party we are heading to capital, so this means we'll have to travel together for some time.
- This means you'll be travelling with a person who holds a major grudge against you, is a ruler of an enemy nation and is known for her aggresive character? - asked Vandergrift. Joachim nodded to every statement. Cornet looked into night skies. Clouds were finally giving up and going faster and faster on the west, to Claudise. Some stars showed up and moonlight was piercing through a thin layer of clouds. Vandergrift realised he's been looking at the sky silently for 15 seconds - Well, who knows, maybe soon you'll wish that your prank was actually the truth.

Unraveling
In the High Commander's quarters in the middle of the night, Rellek was sure he must be the only person in HQ still awake at this hour. It had been days since the battle, a long time since he'd last talked to another human being, and it had been even longer since he'd last slept. He was obsessed, but the anger and obsession was the only thing between him and an emotional breakdown. The High Commander was a mess. He must have looked insane. He felt insane. He had pictures and notes pinned across his wall, all with strings linking them together in a conspiracy web that looked like it had been thrown together by the most disorganized private investigator to ever attempt a case. HQ was all too happy to call off the alarm, but he knew that the reactor wasn't their goal. This wasn't over. He'd heard Theresa's story. He'd heard the way Harper laughed, as if he'd known something he didn't. If he could get the authorization he'd start an inquisition and tear the universe apart looking for answers, but HQ had refused his requests. The evidence didn't add up, yet they continued to dismiss him.
He'd just sent another request begging command to let him hunt down those responsible for the attack, but they kept assuring him that it was all Harper's doing, and he was sure their response would be the same this time. Bullshit. He couldn't rule out the possibility of an inside job. At this point he didn't know who he could trust. The thought of it wore on his mind like sandpaper. He rubbed his tired, bloodshot eyes and spun around on his chair, knocking a ball of yarn to the floor in the process. At the center of his wall of unanswered questions was a single sheet of paper labeled "Edwards?"
He needed a second opinion, from someone whom he knew he could trust. He sent Skyler a private message with his holo simply stating "We need to talk."

A new threat on the horizon
“Skip! Skip this shit!” A young man commanded. He sat in the middle of a giant pool and was surrounded by a dozen scantily clad models in bikinis. One of the two guards standing at the pool edge followed suit. “Of course, Mr Lamont.” One push of a button later Tom Jones’- sex bomb echoed through The room.
“Yeah! That’s my jam.” He declared, as he sniffed a line of cocaine from the buttcheeks of one of his sex slaves, causing one of his guards to laugh. The other one shook his head in embarrassment.
A woman with long brown hair and green eyes, wearing combat armor entered the room and stepped forward. “You have called for me, Sir?”
“Megan my sweetheart. Yes, I require your services again. The Icarians are getting dangerously close to victory. So far business has been mutually beneficial, but I’m afraid that falling under Icarian rulership is not in out interest. So do your thing and make sure that they won't come that far, babe.”
Rolling her eyes, she turned around. “Understood.”
“Hey, Megan!” Lamont yelled. “You’re my sex bomb!”
Rellek, This is Supreme General Blackhead. We successfully defeated Claude’s forces in the canyons and the first army is now pushing further into Claude’s territory. It won’t be long until we seize total victory. I also want to congratulate and thank you and Soul Corruptor’s unit for the outstanding job you did in defending our headquarters. I’m aware of the heavy loses T-STF suffered during the attack, and wish a clean and swift recovery for the surviving agents of your unit. I want to inform you of a new, recent development. Badboy billionaire Francesco Lamont, head of Lamont Corporations has cut ties with us. His company is the largest oil and fuel distributer on the planet. Until now he remained neutral, and supplied both sides, but it appears that he has taken a hostile position towards us. His company is based in Claude’s territory and follows their rules and legislations, which are basically non-existent. If we win this war and take over Claude’s land he would have to follow our regulations. Well… and we’re not in favor of his firm policies and side jobs: human trafficking, slavery, selling women into prostitution, leading drug cartels. That guy is piece of shit, and if it were up to me I would have stormed his mansion, imprisoned him and jacked his oil a long time ago. But you know how the game is played… politicians… Now that he gave us the middle finger, people are finally starting to listen to me. We don’t have the official go yet but I wanted to inform you beforehand that T-STF is intended to take on this mission. I’m fully aware that Rose and Faye can’t be replaced anytime soon, but I still put my trust in T-STF to succeed in this operation. So, inform Skyler as soon as you can. Doctors told me that she isn’t doing very well psychologically, can you elaborate on that? I really hope that she recovers in time. In the meantime I have to warn you about Lamont’s assassin, Megan Verbeck. Lamont is known to assassinate political opponents, and I believe that you and me both should be extra careful in the imminent future. Sincerely, Supreme General Blackhead
