Spoilers for anyone who hasn't played the games (If so, why are you here?), but Maray is probably dead.
What if she wasn't? What if by some miraculous instance of deus ex machina, Maray survives the destruction of Cera? What if our hero returns home at the end of the series to find his sister alive and well? How would she survive? Would it be harmful or helpful to the story as a whole? How proud would she be of Kayto for finally getting a girlfriend?
Please discuss.

Well if she did survive we'd know about it in return, we'd have met up with her somehow
i'd like her to be alive, i would but that's probably not going to happen

Two words: Magical... Girl... Now imagine that scene in the Force Unleashed where Starkiller pulls the Star Destroyer out of the sky using the force, now replace Starkiller with Maray and the Star Destroyer with the Legion.
Or the Legion with a big plaster on it if the player opted to destroy it.
Ladies and gentleman, Sunrider Part 4. O(≧▽≦)OIn all seriousness I don't think she should come back, to me she represents the memories of his peaceful Cera (hence why she is a front row character in Sunrider Academy which toys with more slice of life elements of a normal childhood [well normal for the LiS universe]) which no longer exists and is unlikely to exist again as Kayto remembers (that Cera was permanently lost that day just like his sister).

Bringing her back would be an awful, awful decision.
Coping with Maray's death and eventually overcoming the feelings of guilt stemming from it is the backbone of Kayto's character arc thus far, influencing everything from his relationship with Chigara to his decision to sacrifice himself to save Cera from the Alliance. Maray surviving would enormously cheapen the main character of the series, leaving his development feeling hollow.

Time travel exists in this universe, so anything is possible really (granted there are drawbacks). I do agree for the most part, her death was important to the story. If she were to come back it would have to be handled very well. How? Don't ask me. That's why I started this thread.

Brain in a jar that Kayto can consult about relationship problems?

As you visit maray's grave in re-turn, in the main timeline she must also be dead too. preventing the liberation day masacre wouldn't magically kill or revive her.
The only way I see it being possible that maray survives is if Claude returned to a time period before cera city was destroyed and convinced her to leave the city (but then you could argue that Claud would have no reason to travel back in time to save maray, as she wouldn't be dead)
I don't think she should be revived either, Kayto's character development is majorly based on the fact that he had 'failed maray' so reviving her might cause some issues, the main one being that his actions in liberation day (especially with chigara) where apparently based on that.

To be fair, if Cera city had been obliterated, there wouldn't be anything of Maray left to bury.

To be fair, if Cera city had been obliterated, there wouldn't be anything of Maray left to bury. That is an interesting idea actually, I think that you could make the argument that Maray didn't die when cera city was destroyed, but that idea would require the legions weapon to vaporise everyone caught in the blast radius which is likely but not entirely guaranteed. But as I stated earlier as Maray was buried by Kayto at the end of return, she is dead. This is a fairly convincing argument that she didn't die to the legions attack though. Correct me if there is something I'm overlooking. I'm sure that magpie can make sense of this.

Well you don't need to actually BURY them to make a memorial for someone... many bodies can not be recovered during war but memorials are built anyway.

Well you don't need to actually BURY them to make a memorial for someone... many bodies can not be recovered during war but memorials are built anyway. Well that is true but i believe ava stated that she wanted 'to bury everyone up in the mountain we used to play on when we were young.' and unless I am mistaken, that is the scene during the ending of return. I inferred that she meant everyone related and important to her and Kayto, so I assumed there would be a burial for maray in particular. In addition Ava and Kayto show their repects individually, to ava's father and Maray respectively, which made me think that there was a literal burial of both of them in different locations. What you said could be true but thats just how i inferred these events.

If Maray come back alive I bet she would ask Kayto where is his girlfriend and she would show her disappointed face and you will have a very bad end.

Bringing Maray back would be easy... Kayto could just use the Wishall to jump to a universe where Maray wasn't in Cera city and thus survived. I agree with this and, for this reason, am glad that using the Wishall to bring her back wasn't an option.
